At Animal Tracks, a beautiful nonprofit healing center in Southern California, animals of all kinds are given a second chance.

The facility is dedicated to helping a variety of different animals recover and thrive.

According to Stacey, a caretaker at the sanctuary, their goal is simple: they want every resident to become the animal they were truly meant to be.

For one special arrival named Frank, finding his true self meant discovering a very unusual hobby.

Making Room For Frank

Frank’s journey to Animal Tracks started when his previous living situation became a little too crowded.

He came from a facility that found itself with far too many male armadillos in one space.

They urgently needed to place some of their males to ensure everyone had enough room and a good quality of life.

Animal Tracks stepped up, and they felt incredibly lucky to welcome the unique little guy into their care.

Nature’s Little Aerator

As a yellow armadillo, Frank has some very important natural instincts.

Stacey describes him as "nature’s aerator," explaining that animals like him play a crucial role in the environment.

After great migrations, armadillos, gophers, and groundhogs aerate the ground, which helps regrow the prairies.

When Frank gets to work, he can dig a hole in a matter of seconds, fulfilling his very important job in nature.

A Need For Entertainment

Because Frank was born in captivity before arriving at the sanctuary, his caretakers were always looking for fun things for him to do.

They set him up in a large outdoor playpen area where he could dig to his heart’s content.

However, after a while, it seemed like the little armadillo was actually getting a bit bored with just digging in the dirt.

To keep his mind active, the staff decided to start offering him different toys to see what he might like.

An Unexpected Obsession

Everything changed the day somebody threw a ball into Frank’s enclosure.

To the absolute shock of his caretakers, Frank immediately took to it, showing a natural ability to play that was entirely his own idea.

It quickly became his favorite toy by far, and he would happily spend his time pushing and playing with the ball.

Stacey noted that she had never seen another armadillo play quite like Frank does.

The Ball Budget

Frank’s love for his toys is so intense that the sanctuary actually had to create a special budget just for him.

He plays so hard that he pops about seven balls every single week.

In fact, his caretakers joke that his ultimate goal in life is simply to see if he can pop whatever ball he is given.

He can happily play ball for an hour straight, as long as someone is willing to sit there with him.

A Custom-Built Life

When he isn’t playing basketball, Frank lives a life of pure luxury in his custom-built home.

His house features a basement for when the weather gets hot, a pool that he loves to lay in, and an apartment that keeps him warm at night.

He is surprisingly fast, able to run up to 30 miles an hour when he decides to do a couple of laps around the facility.

After a good run or a long play session, he simply digs a hole and tucks himself in for a well-deserved nap.

The Living Mood Ring

Physically, Frank is just as fascinating as his personality, covered in a keratin shell that feels like a thick fingernail with wiry sensory hairs.

Those hairs act as sensors, telling him if the wind is blowing or if something is sneaking up behind him.

He is also incredibly expressive; when he feels aggressive or excited, the edges of his shell actually turn pink.

Stacey affectionately calls him a "living mood ring," making it wonderfully easy for his caretakers to read exactly how he’s feeling.

A Master Of Survival

Beyond his quirky hobbies, Frank possesses some incredible survival skills.

He can hold his breath for up to six minutes to cross bodies of water or escape predators.

If he can’t make it across in time, he can swallow water into his intestines, turning them into giant pool floaties that allow him to float all day like a boat.

He is also a master architect; when he abandons one of his summer homes to build another, animals like burrowing owls often move in, allowing their families to survive thanks to Frank’s hard work.

Living On His Own Terms

At the end of the day, Frank is a delightfully grouchy, solitary male who just wants to have as much fun as possible.

If he doesn’t like someone, he will literally huff at them, refusing to cultivate relationships with people who don’t understand his strict schedule.

He has absolutely no interest in romance, preferring to annul any potential matches so he can get back to his true passion: playing basketball.

In Frank’s world, life is all about enjoying the simple things, and thanks to his rescuers, he gets to do exactly that every single day.
