Massachusetts Cat Saved From Hoarding Needs Thousands In Care, But The Sacrifice Reveals Something Beautiful
For the first two years of his life, a little Sphynx cat had no one to rely on. But after a dedicated adopter made sacrifices to heal his body, his true, quirky personality finally emerged.
A Hesitant Arrival
For the first two years of his life, he wanted to be touched and loved, but he didn’t have anybody to trust.
Known as "the Chicken," this little ball of skin was rescued from a difficult hoarding situation.
He spent six months in foster care before finally being put up for adoption, which is when he crossed paths with a woman named Bethany.
Bethany already had a bustling household with five cats of her own, plus a revolving door of fosters throughout the year.
When the Chicken first arrived, he was incredibly quiet and unsure of his new surroundings.
Setting Boundaries
It was clear early on that the Chicken was carrying trauma from his past.
Bethany quickly learned that he had strict boundaries about how he wanted to be handled.
"I wasn’t able to touch his stomach, and just even rubbing him in a certain way, you could tell he just was like, ‘I don’t know about that,’" she recalled.
The Itchy, Uncomfortable Truth
Beyond his emotional walls, the Chicken was suffering physically.
He was constantly itching his ears, scratching his body, and licking himself without relief.
Realizing she needed to help him, Bethany started extensively researching Sphynx cats.
She admitted she didn’t even know what the unique breed normally entailed for daily care and maintenance.
Sacrifices For Health
Getting the Chicken healthy was not going to be an easy or inexpensive journey.
He required a highly specific special diet, daily medication, and frequent baths to soothe his skin.
Within the first four to six months, his vet bills piled up to thousands of dollars.
To make it work, Bethany and her family stopped going out to dinner for a while.
"I look at it as that I don’t buy fancy coffees, I use that money, and it goes towards their monthly medications," she explained.
A Remarkable Transformation
Every skipped dinner and fancy coffee was entirely worth it.
As his health improved, the Chicken’s true personality finally began to shine through.
He started playing more, running around the house, and actively wanting to interact with the other cats.
Looking at how healthy and vibrant he is now, Bethany knows they made the right choice.
The Social Butterfly
Today, the formerly quiet cat is the absolute social butterfly of the house.
Anytime new foster cats come in, he is immediately there to greet them.
Of course, his welcoming committee duties come with an ulterior motive: he especially wants to see what food they have so he can try it.
In just the almost year they’ve had him, his interactions with humans have completely transformed.
Overcoming The Touch Barrier
He now actively seeks out attention from anyone who visits the house.
However, Bethany notes that when people first come over, they are often a little nervous to touch him.
They don’t know what he’s going to feel like, often assuming he will be slimy or sticky.
But once guests get the courage to pet him, they simply can’t stop.
"He’s almost like addictive," Bethany said. "He feels so soft."
The ‘Grilled Chicken’ Quirks
With his newfound confidence came a series of hilarious, endearing quirks.
One of his absolute favorite places to sit is on the floor heating vents, earning him the nickname "grilled chicken."
He also has a strange habit of licking everything in sight, from glasses and tables to windows and walls.
He is highly observant, quietly watching the dynamics between the other cats in the home.
Plotting To Take Over
The Chicken studies everything, leading Bethany to joke that he’s plotting to take over the world—or at least the house.
He is an opportunist, quickly taking advantage if a treat is left unguarded.
If another cat gets up and leaves a warm blanket, he will be the first one there to steal the spot.
He even takes advantage of moments when Bethany is scolding the other cats, coming over to sit pretty as if to say, "Look at me, I’m perfect."
Looking Into Your Soul
There is something incredibly special about the way the Chicken looks at the people he loves.
According to Bethany, it feels like he is looking right into your soul, genuinely wanting to get to know you.
After a rough start to life, he finally knows that he is safe and deeply cared for.
"We’ve peeled back all of those bad layers from his previous life," Bethany said, "and we’ve discovered this amazing cat."
