Cat Was The Last Of His Litter At Illinois Shelter, But His Hidden Talent Left His New Mom Stunned

A curious rescue cat named Momo discovers a unique passion when his new mom brings a pottery wheel into their home.

Before finding his forever home, Momo had a rough start to life. The tiny black-and-white kitten was found wandering as a stray.

He was brought into a shelter alongside his siblings. They all shared a distinctive, adorable "cat-cow" coat pattern.

One by one, his brothers and sisters were chosen by families. Soon, little Momo was one of the last kittens left waiting for a second chance.

A Perfect Fit

Sophia, a resident of Chicago, decided it was time to open her home to a pet in need. She wanted to help clear out the shelter and give a deserving animal a loving family.

She had never owned cats before, having grown up exclusively with dogs. She admitted she was definitely not an experienced cat parent.

Despite her lack of feline experience, she felt that Momo was a perfect fit. She brought the tiny, curious kitten home to start their new life together.

Bringing The Studio Home

Sophia works as a pottery teacher in Chicago, spending her days shaping clay and sharing her art with others. It had always been her dream to have a pottery wheel of her very own.

Last summer, that dream finally came true. She was fortunate enough to acquire a wheel from a local artist who was no longer practicing.

She set up the wheel in her home, thrilled to have her own workspace. She had no idea that her new rescue cat was about to become her most dedicated student.

An Unexpected Apprentice

From the moment the wheel arrived, Momo was captivated. He showed an intense interest in the spinning clay right from the start.

He always wanted to be involved in whatever Sophia was doing. Sometimes he would just sit quietly on the windowsill, intensely watching her work.

Other times, he was much more hands-on. He would crawl right up into her lap as she was throwing clay and working on new pieces.

Mimicking The Master

As they spent more time together at the wheel, Sophia noticed something incredible. Momo wasn’t just watching; he was learning.

When she held him near the wheel, he would begin to move his paws in a very specific way. He almost seemed to mimic the exact motions a potter uses when pulling the walls of a clay piece.

It was a stunning realization for the pottery teacher. She couldn’t help but wonder if her observant rescue cat was actually trying to craft the clay himself.

A Gentle Touch

When cats normally play with toys or chase a laser pointer, their movements are fast, erratic, and intense. Momo’s approach to pottery is entirely different.

He is incredibly gentle when interacting with the clay. His moves are calculated, as if he thinks deeply about what he is going to do before he even moves a muscle.

Even though he has sharp claws, he uses the softest touch with his paws. Sophia jokes that he might actually be making deliberate design choices on the spinning clay.

A Tale Of Two Kitties

Momo’s artistic passion is entirely his own. Sophia’s other cat, Yuna, couldn’t care less about the pottery wheel.

Yuna is what Sophia describes as a "classic cat." She prefers traditional feline hobbies over sculpting.

Instead of joining them at the wheel, Yuna loves to sit in her favorite windowsill. She spends her time happily chattering at the birds outside.

A Masterpiece Of A Bond

For Sophia, this unique shared hobby has made her first foray into cat ownership incredibly rewarding. They get to be her first cats, and she gets to be their first person.

Momo’s gentle, artistic spirit has taught her a valuable lesson. He shows her every day that life doesn’t always have to be terribly serious, and it’s important to just have fun doing what you love.

By sharing her favorite activity with the little stray who was once left behind, Sophia has watched Momo blossom. Their beautiful bond continues to grow, one piece of pottery at a time.
