One day, a grieving family walked through the doors of the SPCA Cincinnati with a very special feline.

The cat’s previous owner had recently passed away, leaving the beloved pet in need of a new home.

While it was clear the cat had been deeply loved, her physical condition immediately caught the attention of the shelter staff.

The family cared enough to ensure she ended up in a safe place, but her journey to a healthy life was only just beginning.

When she was officially weighed during her intake, the scale read a staggering 25 pounds.

It didn’t take long for the sweet, heavy-set cat to become the talk of the entire rescue facility.

Chris, who works with the rescue, kept hearing her staff marvel at the new arrival.

“My staff kept saying, ‘Have you seen this cat?'” Chris recalled. “She has just so much personality, but she’s really fat.”

Meeting The ‘Giant Pumpkin’

Intrigued by the constant chatter, Chris decided to go down to the kennel area to meet the famous feline for herself.

She quickly realized that the cat wasn’t a naturally large breed like a Maine Coon.

Instead, she was an average-sized cat carrying an immense amount of excess weight.

Because of her round shape, she literally looked like a pumpkin, which perfectly suited her name.

A Clean Bill Of Health

Chris spoke with her husband, and they agreed to bring Pumpkin home as a foster to help her decompress.

One of the first steps was figuring out if a medical issue was causing her severe weight gain.

Pumpkin went through a battery of X-rays, lab work, and blood tests to check for underlying conditions.

Surprisingly, every single test came back within the normal range. Pumpkin was perfectly healthy, just severely overfed.

The Stress Of The Exam Room

Despite the good news, the medical checkups were incredibly stressful for the timid cat.

Pumpkin absolutely despised being examined or prodded by the veterinary staff.

During one particularly stressful exam, the doctor noted that the cat actually turned blue—a stress response Chris had never heard of in felines.

It became clear that Pumpkin needed a calm, quiet environment to truly heal.

Food As An Emotional Crutch

Once settled into her foster home, Chris and her husband began the long process of regulating Pumpkin’s daily food intake.

They quickly noticed that Pumpkin used eating as a coping mechanism for her anxiety.

Whenever she felt nervous or agitated, she would immediately waddle over to her food bowl.

If the bowl was empty because she had already eaten her daily portion, she would look visibly disappointed.

Settling Into Foster Life

Despite the strict new diet, Pumpkin began to show her wonderful personality to her foster family.

Chris noted that Pumpkin has big, captivating “alien eyes” that easily draw people in.

She also proved to be incredibly gentle with the other resident cats in the house.

The other felines quickly realized Pumpkin was no threat, allowing her to peacefully become part of the family dynamic.

Knowing The Difference

While Pumpkin hated the vet, she absolutely loved receiving affection from Chris.

The sweet cat learned to tell the difference between someone checking her body for lumps and someone just giving her love.

As long as she was being gently petted and adored, Pumpkin was incredibly happy.

Her loud, rumbling purrs filled the room, proving that she was finally feeling safe.

A Promise For The Future

Chris knows that Pumpkin’s weight loss journey will be a marathon, not a sprint, but they are in it for the long haul.

She often speaks softly to the cat, comforting her about the loss of her previous owner while promising her a bright future.

“You were meant to be with us,” Chris told her. “You’re safe with us. You’re going to have a fantastic rest of your life.”

The ultimate goal is to help Pumpkin reach a comfortable size where she can easily move, play, and enjoy all the good things still to come.
