Most rescued felines don’t find their forever homes right away, but that wasn’t the case for this ginger beauty.
One day, a kind-hearted soul was out walking her dog when she spotted a box on the side of the road. She couldn’t help but approach to see what was inside.
To her surprise, she saw a ginger cat nestled inside the box, left out in the cold, patiently waiting for a helping hand.
Upon seeing this poor boy in desperate need of help, his rescuer took him to those who could help him. She reached out to the Veterinary Emergency Group in White Plains, New York, and Little Wanderers, a rescue organization also from New York.
The rescue volunteers welcomed the cat with open arms and named him Elf. However, the poor cat had mixed feelings about everything. He was grateful and happy for being saved from the cold and the streets, but also very scared and confused.
The volunteers immediately provided Elf with everything he needed, including food and water. They were surprised because he was eating like he had been starving for days, which was probably true.
Yet, Elf turned out to be one lucky feline. While many rescued cats wait for months or even years for their forever home, Elf’s fate took a different turn. He instantly won the heart of a devoted woman named Tricia.
Tricia heard about Elf from the finder’s mother, and a deep intuition compelled her to act. She recalled:
“I already have six that all have been rescued off of the streets. I thought about it for a second and said, ‘I’d take him.”
Without even laying eyes on Elf, she procured a pet carrier and headed to Little Wanderers NYC to pick him up. The moment they met, it was apparent that they were a match made in heaven. She remembered:
“I was ecstatic. I spoke to Lisa from the rescue, filled out an adoption form, and I went and picked him up. When we got home, he warmed up to me immediately. He’s so sweet.”
Despite his tumultuous past, Elf found a loving home in record time and quickly adapted to it. Tricia gave him a new name, Thumper, symbolizing a fresh beginning in life.
However, Tricia noticed something unusual about the Thumper’s hind legs; they almost looked like a rabbit’s back legs.
She consulted a veterinarian, only to discover that these legs caused him no pain or discomfort. They simply limited his ability to jump with his hind limbs.
Nevertheless, Thumper remained a contented kitty, savoring the indoor life in the company of his loving family. Tricia said:
“I’ve got a soft spot for the cats who need a little bit more love. I’ve got a feeling (his back legs) might be the reason he was thrown out.”
In less than 24 hours, Thumper transformed from an abandoned cat in a cold box to a cherished member of a forever family. Tricia’s heart was won over by this ginger furball, and she declared:
“He will never be abandoned again. He’s got catnip toys and treats and everything a cat could want. He’s even got other cat siblings to play with and become family with – a very happy beginning to the holiday season.”
If only every abandoned cat could be adopted as swiftly as Thumper. Don’t you agree?
