A tiny kitten, abandoned on a trashcan, found his way into a family’s life, starting a journey none of them could have imagined.
It all began when Brant’s son received a text from a friend – a message that was impossible to ignore. And just like that, the night took a turn they never saw coming.
The message included a picture of a tiny kitten sprawled on top of a trashcan. He looked so small, so frail, and it seemed like his mother had abandoned him.
Brant and his family didn’t think twice. They rushed to bring the kitten home, unsure of what to expect.
The tiny thing was so young his eyes were still shut tight. Brant’s heart ached at the sight. He knew they had to act quickly.
Digging through their supplies, they found some kitten formula. It wasn’t much, but it was something. As they tried to get a few drops into the kitten’s mouth, they realized just how daunting the situation was.
The vet they managed to call late that night was brutally honest: the kitten’s prognosis was grim.
There was no comfort, just the cold reality of the situation. Brant shared the vet’s words:
“This cat won’t live. You just can’t keep a kitten this young alive. They need their mom. You just can’t.”
But Brant’s family wasn’t ready to give up. They stayed up all night feeding the little one, keeping him warm, and praying for a miracle. They just hoped their care would be enough to pull him through.
That first night was chaotic, but somehow, against all odds, the kitten survived until morning.
Without wasting any time, the family knew they needed professional help. So they reached out to St. Bonnie’s Animal Sanctuary, hoping they could give the little guy the care he needed to have a real chance at life.
Thankfully, the kind staff there were willing to take him in. They promised round-the-clock care and updates.
Despite the odds, the kitten showed resilience. He made it through that first critical week, and then the next.
Every update from the sanctuary brought a glimmer of hope – a picture here, a message there – until finally, the miraculous news came: the kitten was thriving.
When the day came to bring him home, Brant’s family was overjoyed. They named him Oscar and quickly discovered his mischievous personality.
Oscar made the house his playground. He darted around like a rocket, fearless and endlessly curious. No spot in the house was off-limits to him.
Every chair, every table, every nook and cranny was just another opportunity for exploration, as Brant shared:
“He’s a lunatic! He’s into everything, no fear, not a second of thought about anything… He’s got a full run of the house 24 hours a day. Goes wherever he wants, happy, having the time of his life.”
Even the family pets had to adjust to this little troublemaker. The family dog, London, who was usually grumpy around cats, couldn’t faze Oscar. He’d march right up to her as if daring her to chase him.
And Stewie, the family’s other cat, found himself endlessly pursued by this tiny, fearless ball of fluff.
But for all his wild antics, Oscar had a soft side that melted Brant’s heart. After hours of tearing through the house, he’d finally run out of steam.
That’s when he’d climb onto Brant’s shoulder, kneading with his tiny paws as he nestled in close. He’d curl up on his dad’s neck, perfectly content like it was the safest place in the world.
As he drifted off, he’d suckle Brant’s hand – the only time his purrs filled the house. This made Brant wonder just how much Oscar must have missed the care and warmth of his mother.
That gesture, so simple yet so full of trust, seemed to say, ‘This is where I feel safe now.’ It made Brant sad and happy all at once, knowing how far Oscar had come.
As Brant watches Oscar snooze peacefully, he can’t help but marvel at the journey they’ve all been on. This kitten, who had come so close to not making it, is now the heart of their home, as Brant shared:
“I just can’t believe that there’s this little life now and I’m just like, oh man, you have no idea we saved you.”
It’s moments like this that make Brant realize just how lucky they all are to have found each other, and to have given this little fighter the life he deserves.
