Cats are known for their independent personalities and curious habits, which often lead them to explore their surroundings.
Whether they’re just checking out the backyard or going on a big adventure around town, these furry companions can really surprise us.
One such adventurous cat is Beans, a ginger tabby, who loves to travel.
Beans had a habit of disappearing for short periods, much to the worry of his owners, Cara and Colin McBurnie. However, his latest adventure took an unexpected twist.
One day, Beans suddenly went missing from home, leaving his family anxious and searching everywhere. Ms McBurnie shared in an interview:
“We searched and searched, looking everywhere. I’ve been out every day looking but thought something must have happened to him. I didn’t really expect to see him again but joined lots of local lost-and-found Facebook pages.”
As days turned into weeks, their hope started to fade. The McBurnies shared posts on social media, reached out to local shelters, and put up flyers, but there was still no sign of their beloved cat. Unbeknownst to them, Beans was off on an amazing journey.
Far away in one busy city, a kind woman named Kelly Ryan spotted a ginger cat near her outdoor cat box.
Curious about this new visitor, Kelly decided to watch him closely. She could tell the cat looked lost and wanted to help him.
As time passed, Beans became a familiar face in Kelly’s garden. He often curled up in the cat box, napping or just enjoying the quiet. Kelly mentioned:
“I didn’t feed him straight away as I thought he was probably owned, then one night saw him sleeping in the cat box and he was still there the next day, then the one after that. I just gave him a few biscuits to start with but heard he was going to visit other neighbours too and it felt like he was around too much and that something wasn’t quite right.”
Worried that he might be lost, Kelly took the step to have him checked for a microchip. To her surprise, the scan showed that the cat belonged to the McBurnie family, which was over 300 miles away!
So, with the help of Cats Protection, Kelly was able to get in touch with the McBurnies and bring them the good news about their missing pet.
The McBurnies were so thrilled to find out that their beloved cat was safe. They quickly set off on a 600-mile round trip to bring Beans back home.
The reunion was filled with emotion, as Beans purred happily in his owner’s arms. As Cara shared:
“We were all exhausted and he slept in the bed all night by my husband. Even my other cat, Missy, was happy to see him – they usually keep a bit of a distance but had a nice moment and a sniff together. I’m so glad we had him microchipped and updated his record. There’s no way he’d have come back to us otherwise.”
Now, Beans’ adventure shows just how important it is to microchip our pets. This easy process can really help bring lost pets back to their families.
So, if you’re thinking about getting a pet, make sure to think about microchipping first. You never know where your pet might go!
Madison Rogers, who works with Cats Protection, also said that it’s truly incredible how a microchip helped Beans get back to his owners just one day after being scanned.
Without that chip, Beans probably wouldn’t have made it back to the family that cares for him so much.
