LA Shelter Couldn’t Figure Out Why This Dog Was Suffering, Then They Heard The Shocking Truth

Sometimes, it takes time to find where you truly belong. But when you do, it’s worth every step of the journey.
For a little dog named Chewy, that journey started in the loneliest corner of a crowded shelter. While other dogs barked and wagged their tails, eager for attention, Chewy sat frozen in his kennel as if he wished he could disappear.
He didn’t try to get noticed. He didn’t run to the front of the kennel, hoping for a kind touch. He just sat there, quiet and withdrawn.

That was what caught the attention of Meggan from the HIT Living Foundation, a dog rescue in Los Angeles.
There was something about him that pulled at her heart. He wasn’t just scared; he was completely shut down, as Meggan shared in a YouTube video:
“I definitely think Chewy was scared in the shelter. He was in the back of the shelter and everyone else was coming to the front. And his eyes were so humanlike. They just looked like they were looking at the depths of your soul.”

Meggan and her team knew right away that Chewy needed out. So they brought him to their rescue, hoping he’d start to heal.
But when they placed him in a foster home, it became clear how deep his wounds ran. He refused to eat unless he was completely alone, and any time someone entered the room, he retreated to his pen, too afraid even to look up.
It was heartbreaking to see a dog so deeply afraid of everything around him.

Days passed, and while the team hoped Chewy would start to trust, he remained distant. Then, as if his past trauma wasn’t enough, he came down with an upper respiratory infection.
Once that cleared up, a new issue appeared: he was constantly thirsty and hungry, drinking water as if he’d never had enough.
Meggan could feel it in her gut that something wasn’t right. This wasn’t just fear or emotional trauma. There was something deeper going on.

The team didn’t waste any time. They rushed him to the vet, hoping for answers and dreading what they might find.
Test after test, they waited anxiously, until finally, the results came back. Chewy had diabetes.
It was both heartbreaking and a relief. Heartbreaking because he had likely suffered for so long without anyone knowing what was wrong. A relief because now, they could help him.

They started him on insulin right away, carefully monitoring his blood sugar levels and hoping for the best. It was a turning point for Chewy, not just physically but emotionally too.
And then, something amazing happened…
Slowly, Chewy started to change. His body began to feel better, and little by little, so did his heart.

He started exploring his surroundings, and for the first time, he seemed curious instead of afraid. Little by little, Chewy was coming out of his shell and even started seeking affection from Meggan, as she shared:
“I will never forget, I was sitting on the couch watching a movie and he popped out of the X-pen and just sat at my feet and it was the most incredible moment.”
It was a small thing, but to Meggan, it was everything. It meant he finally felt safe.

With each passing day, Chewy grew stronger and more confident. His energy started to shine through, showing his true, happy self more and more every day.
Then, the best moment of all came: his adoption day!
It felt like everything had led up to this point. He was finally ready to leave all the fear behind and step into a life full of love.

Chewy’s new mom, a kind woman from Washington, greeted him with open arms, and the second he saw her, something just clicked.
He trotted right over to her and gave her the sweetest little kiss, like he already knew he was going to his forever home.
It was like they were made for each other. It felt so natural, like they’d been waiting for this moment all along.

Now, with his new name, Morris, he’s finally living the life he always deserved. Each day, he becomes a little braver, a little happier, and a whole lot more loved.
His family can’t imagine their lives without him, and honestly, neither can he.
Like I mentioned before, sometimes it takes a while to find where you truly belong. But when you do, it makes every step of the journey so worth it.
