Couple Visits New Jersey Shelter To Adopt A Dog And Leaves With Someone Unexpected

Senior cats have always held a special place in my heart. It’s painful to think of how many of them spend years in shelters without a single person showing interest in adopting them.

These older companions deserve a loving home just as much as the abandoned kittens do, yet sadly, most people tend to choose the younger cats instead.

Not long ago, I came across Hang Nguyen’s story, and it truly restored my faith in people. Get ready for an incredible adoption journey.

Hang’s fiancé, Kyle, had always dreamed of adopting a dog. But whenever he brought it up, Hang’s answer was always no.

She had grown up in a home without pets, where her mother thought cats and dogs were smelly and demanded too much attention.

Having never had an animal of her own, Hang carried a bit of fear about the idea of adopting.

One day she finally gave in and agreed to go with Kyle to a local shelter in New Jersey. As she shared in her video:

“I figured we can look around and if I see a cute dog, I might warm up to the idea of having a pet, especially if they needed a home.”

When they arrived at the shelter, they were told the dog section was under renovation. The only animals they could meet that day were the cats who were still waiting for homes.

The couple agreed, figuring they would take a quick look and then head home. But fate clearly had a different plan in store for them.

The staff brought them to meet a cat named Beppo, a senior sweetheart with the most beautiful, fluffy coat you could imagine.

Sadly, Beppo’s eyes were cloudy, and he had been waiting in the shelter for a long time without receiving even one adoption application.

The moment Hang met Beppo, her heart melted. Almost without thinking, she was filling out the adoption forms, and just a week later, the senior fluffball was finally heading to his forever home.

After spending so many years in a shelter, though, Beppo was understandably nervous.

In those early days, he tucked himself away in hiding spots – behind the toilet, under the bed, even squeezed beneath the dresser.

Hang was afraid she might be doing something wrong, as she said:

“I was also scared because I didn’t know if I was a good cat mom. I was worried if he would open up. I literally felt bad that I took him home from the shelter. Like that’s how bad it was.”

Little did Hang know, it was the best decision she ever made. Beppo only needed a few days to adjust to his new environment and his behavior was perfectly normal.

However, after almost a week in his new home, Beppo almost gave his parents a heart attack! As Hang explained:

“Somehow he found a way to get in the hole in our wall. While we were freaking out on how to get him out, he came out like everything was normal.”

Beppo finally started exploring around the house, feeling more comfortable around his new parents. As Hang mentioned:

“But slowly and eventually, I feel like he got used to the movements around the home. My movement, and that I am not there to hurt him.”

What really brightened my day was hearing Hang’s change of heart. She quickly discovered how wonderful cats truly are as companions.

All those worries she once had – that they were smelly or demanded too much attention – turned out to be completely untrue.

Hang and her fiance fell head over heels for sweet Beppo and she even advocates for senior cats now! As said:

“Adult cats are amazing. Sometimes I think about how I met him randomly at the shelter and what could have happened if I didn’t meet him or give him a chance because I thought I wasn’t ready for a pet.”

I feel so thankful for Hang and Kyle, who opened their hearts to Beppo and gave him the forever home he had been waiting for.

With them, he will always be safe and loved, never again facing the fear of growing old in a shelter.
