Brooklyn Rescuer Spends Days Monitoring A Stray Cat Until He Finally Earns His Trust

Looking after the cats in your community can be incredibly fulfilling. Offering them food, shelter, and medical attention can make the difference between survival and suffering.
Today’s story is about a stray who was given a second chance thanks to Will Zweigart, a dedicated foster and rescue advocate.
Will has been caring for stray cats in Brooklyn for nearly 15 years, and his commitment has saved countless lives along the way.

Brooklyn is home to countless stray cats, many of whom survive by forming colonies. One such colony had settled in Will’s backyard, where he makes sure they have food each day.
Then, one day, he spotted a new face among them – a ginger cat who seemed out of place. Curious, Will set up a camera to keep an eye on him and soon witnessed something truly touching.
Normally, the colony was quick to chase off any outsider daring to sneak a meal, but this time was different. Instead of being pushed away, the little ginger was welcomed into the group.

As the ginger cat ate, Will noticed he was struggling to breathe. With his years of fostering experience, he quickly recognised the telltale signs of a respiratory infection.
Determined to help, Will made up his mind to get the poor boy to a vet as quickly as possible.

Catching the ginger cat proved to be a challenge. He was terrified of people, and Will knew earning his trust would take patience.
To help, he set up a trap with food inside, giving the stray a chance to get comfortable. It didn’t work right away – the first day came and went without success.
So, Will allowed the ginger boy to return each day, eating safely inside the trap until he finally felt secure enough.

After several days, the moment came, and Will gently closed the hatch, bringing him one step closer to the care he needed.
Will named the ginger boy Julius and quickly brought him inside his house. Julius was calm and he immediately picked out a cushion to nap on!

The very next morning, the vet prescribed two courses of antibiotics along with plenty of rest. Back at home, Will kept him separate from his other cats, and that’s when the recovery journey truly began.
Julius quickly settled into a routine, spending much of his time curled up on a favourite cushion, catching up on sleep.

Will gave him gentle grooming sessions, carefully brushing through his coat until all the mats and tangles were gone.
Before long, Julius was looking healthy again, transformed into a truly handsome boy.
Will used a damp and warm washcloth to gently remove all the discharge from his nose and eyes. Julius was pampered like a true king and he enjoyed every minute of it!

After a quick vet visit, Julius was finally free of the respiratory infection! As Will said in his video:
“The last and best part of recovery is seeing when a cat is ready to play again.”

This meant only one thing – Julius was ready for adoption! Although Will bonded with Julius, he knew he had to give him away, as mentioned:
“People always say they could never foster because it would be so hard to give up the cat after they’ve bonded. It’s hard. What makes it easier is knowing that Julius is going to be a center of attention somewhere.”

Because Will has dedicated his life to rescuing strays, finding homes for cats like Julius is the only way he can keep making room for others in need.
His compassion and selflessness shine through in everything he does. Julius has since settled into his forever home, while Will carries on his mission of caring for Brooklyn’s strays.
