Senior Dog Overlooked At New York Shelter After Losing An Eye In A Dog Attack
Some stories grab hold of your heart the moment you hear them and Chyna’s is one of them.
This senior bulldog mix has been waiting at the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation in Hampton Bays, New York, for someone to notice her gentle spirit and give her the home she’s been dreaming of.
Ashley Bloom, the shelter’s director of services, decided to share Chyna’s story, hoping that someone out there would see her for the beautiful soul she is.

Despite her sweet personality and calm demeanor, visitors keep passing her by. Bloom shared in an interview:
“Chyna is an adorable senior bulldog mix who came into our care after the death of her owner. Before she came to us, Chyna’s life wasn’t easy. She was attacked by another dog and lost an eye, and, sadly, the injury went untreated. It’s fully healed now and doesn’t cause her any pain.”
Chyna’s body carries more than physical scars. It tells the story of a dog who’s endured years of hardship. Bloom said:
“Chyna was also used for breeding for many years, and her body shows the signs of that life. All these marks tell the story of everything she’s survived.”
Shelter life isn’t easy for any dog, especially older ones. The noise, the stress, and the constant waiting can take a toll.

Studies, like one published in PeerJ Life & Environment in 2019, have shown that a dog’s cortisol levels – the hormone linked to stress – drop significantly when they spend time outside of the shelter.
For Chyna, though, the shelter staff say she faces each day with remarkable strength and grace. Bloom added:
“Although Chyna has faced more than her share of hardships, you’d never know it from her smile. She greets every person like an old friend.”
Even with her missing eye, Chyna doesn’t let anything hold her back. Sadly, that same injury has made it harder for her to find a home. Bloom said:
“Chyna doesn’t let her missing eye slow her down one bit, and it doesn’t affect her life at all, but, sadly, it has affected her chances at finding a home. Some people see her injury as unsightly and overlook her, which has been heartbreaking for us, because we see nothing but beauty in her.”
Despite everything she’s been through, Chyna remains polite, calm, and endlessly loving.

The team at Southampton believes she’d thrive as the only dog in a quiet, affectionate home where she can finally relax and feel safe. Bloom shared:
“She’s looking for a peaceful, loving home where she can finally relax and soak up the comfort she deserves. If you have a cozy couch and an open heart, Chyna is ready to fill your home with love.”

After a lifetime of hardship, this beautiful senior girl deserves a chance to rest her head somewhere soft and safe – a place where she can trade the noise of the shelter for the gentle hum of love and belonging.
Whoever opens their heart to Chyna won’t just be rescuing her. They’ll be gaining a loyal friend who has waited her whole life for that one, perfect forever home.
