Recently, Tails High, an animal rescue organization in Washington, welcomed a litter of five orange kittens to their shelter. The kittens were born outdoors, skinny, and in need of urgent care.
Thankfully, Penny Richards, a foster volunteer, stepped in to help, unaware that this ginger family would soon gain a black brother.
As soon as the kittens arrived at Penny’s foster home, she sprang into action and began treating them. She shared in an interview:
“Some of them had eyes that were stuck shut. They were much smaller than your typical five-week-old kittens, and the girls, in particular, were very bony. Thankfully, they were all great eaters, so within a few days, they had already started to fill out.”
Thanks to Penny’s dedicated care, the five kittens began showing remarkable improvement. As they finally started coming out of their shells, Penny affectionately named them after game consoles. She said:
“Vectrex immediately stood out as a very gentle, sweet boy who just wanted to be held. Atari (the sickest upon arrival) was the first to show her fun personality as she bounced around, and soon everyone followed suit. They are a playful group but are very sweet kittens with the most gentle souls.”
Just as this feline gang was improving and exploring their new surroundings, Penny received a call about a tiny black kitten found inside a car’s engine compartment.
The poor kitten was all alone and in desperate need of help and some company, so Penny came up with a perfect idea. She welcomed the black kitten with open arms and named him Subaru, after the car he was rescued from.
From the moment Subaru arrived at his foster home, he was energetic and loving. Penny described:
“He absolutely loves to run all over and pounce on everything as he plays. He’s only a little younger (than the console kittens), but the extra floof makes Subaru the same size as his friends.”
After ensuring Subaru was completely healthy, Penny decided it was time for him to meet the ginger gang. Seeing the ginger kittens embrace the black kitten as one of their own brought tears to her eyes.
They quickly bonded as if they had known each other forever. Penny shared:
“The console kittens immediately accepted him as their new brother, and Nintendo would follow him everywhere. Nintendo is a sweet little boy who just loves to make new friends. Little Subaru was so happy to have a new family.”
Subaru was overjoyed to finally have some friends with whom he could play for hours and snuggle up at the end of the day. Penny added:
“They love jumping on one another and wrestling each other. They also love nothing more than piling up on my lap together as they purr and nap. Just like the consoles they are named after, these kittens provide hours of fun and games.”
Now, all six kittens are thriving and enjoying their lives in their foster home, thanks to Penny, who didn’t turn a blind eye to them.
Hopefully, they will soon find loving families and forever homes where they can continue to live happily ever after, just as they deserve.
