Fierce Little Bobcat Rescued From Barbed Wire Makes Daring Sprint Back To The California Wilderness

little bobcat

A few months back, this small bobcat, only two months old, found herself in a really tough spot – and I mean tough!

She was found all stuck in a barbed wire fence. Luckily, a kind local businessman saw her struggling and, even though she was understandably hissing and growling, he carefully freed her from the nasty wire trap.

After her rescue, this feisty kitten was taken to the amazing people at the Lindsay Wildlife Museum in Walnut Creek, California. But, being just a baby at two months old, she still needed her mom.

When she got there, it was obvious she had been through a lot. The poor little thing was dehydrated and had a bad puncture wound on her neck, which could have turned into a serious infection if she had been left alone in the wild. It’s scary to think about what could have happened if that businessman hadn’t stepped in.

Even though she was just a young bobcat, her attitude was described as super fierce, as Dr. Guthrum Purdin, who is in charge of veterinary sciences at the museum, shared in an interview:

“Her attitude … is very ferocious, even more so than usual for bobcats.”

It seems like this wasn’t a little kitten who would let a small incident with barbed wire get in the way of her wild spirit!

Dr. Purdin also mentioned that she was kept at the museum to allow her to heal and grow a bit more, since bobcat kittens usually stay with their moms for about a year to learn important survival skills.

The Lindsay Wildlife Museum teamed up with the fantastic Sonoma County Wildlife Rescue to give this spirited little cat the best chance to return to her home in the wild.

For six long months, they took care of her, helping her recover and grow stronger. They knew she was ready to go back to the wild when she started doing what all good wild cats do – catching her own food!

At seven months old and weighing a healthy six pounds, this little bobcat was considered fit and ready to go back to her wild life earlier this month. And wow, did she take advantage of that freedom!

As soon as she realized the door of her carrier was open and the big wilderness was in front of her, this little powerhouse shot out of the carrier and away from her caregivers like a flash, disappearing into the trees.

It was as if she had been holding her breath for six months, just waiting for this moment! Dr. Purdin added:

“It’s been a long journey for this little bobcat. It’s time for her to go back to where she belongs: wild and free.”

And everyone who helped rescue and care for her feels the same way! Now, thanks to the help of these caring people and the skilled care she received, she is ready to go back to the wild, where she can hunt and live freely. Isn’t that just amazing?
