Colorado Woman Adopts A Kitten, Then He Does Something She Never Expected
That warm, fuzzy feeling when your partner connects with your pet? Most people live for it. But for one woman in Northern Colorado, it came with a twist she never saw coming.
Kat Newquist was certain she held the top spot in her kitten’s heart until her fluffy little scene-stealer made a very public switch in loyalty.
Suddenly, all his affection was reserved for someone else entirely: Kat’s boyfriend, Jackson.
A few years earlier, Kat had rescued a pregnant stray and decided to keep one of the kittens. That kitten grew into Dave, a ginger ball of fluff with a big personality… and a habit of choosing favorites.
From the start, Dave was full of personality playful, mischievous, and a total attention-seeker. But everything changed one day when Jackson quite literally became Dave’s hero.
When Dave was just a few weeks old, he lost his balance and almost tumbled off the bed. Jackson swooped in just in time, catching the tiny kitten before he hit the floor.
From that moment on, Dave was smitten. It was love at first rescue. As Kat sweetly put it in one of her videos:
“They are kindred spirits somehow, and it is so unbelievably sweet.”
From then on, Jackson could barely take a step without his little shadow following close behind. If Jackson left the room, Dave would sit at the door, meowing his heart out until his favorite human returned.
If Jackson was home, Dave was right there beside him, always watching, always purring, always ready for cuddles.
One day, when Jackson decided to work outside on the patio, Dave wasn’t having it. The idea of his dad being so close yet so far sent him into full protest mode.
He pressed his little paws against the glass and meowed at the top of his lungs until Jackson came back inside. Kat couldn’t help but laugh and admitted:
“Basically, Dave wants to be where Jackson is pretty much all the time.”
In a playful attempt to reclaim her cat’s affection, Kat decided to try something bold she dressed up like Jackson, complete with his clothes and cologne, hoping to trick Dave into giving her the same loving attention.
For a split second, it worked. Dave came running up, excited for a cuddle… until he realised it wasn’t his beloved dad. The look of disappointment on his face said it all.
Despite being hilariously “third-wheeled” in her own relationship, Kat finds the whole thing endearing. As she shared:
“I did not expect to have a cat usurp my relationship, but, honestly, at the end of the day, it’s so sweet, and I’d so much rather have a partner who is so loved by an animal.”
Today, Kat fully embraces her role as the amused observer in this unexpected love triangle.
Dave continues to be Jackson’s biggest fan, following him everywhere and showering him with devotion, while Kat captures their adorable moments for her followers on Instagram.
She might not be the favourite human, but she’s got front-row seats to one of the sweetest cat-human friendships ever and honestly, she wouldn’t trade it for anything.
