Alabama Cat Gets Diagnosed With Cerebellar Hypoplasia Then Vet Suggests Something Shocking

Stephanie and her husband had already fostered over two dozen cats through Kitty Cat Haven and Rescue in Alabama when Phoebe arrived.

From the start, she seemed different. Her steps were shaky, her little head wobbling as she tried to stay upright. 

The vet soon confirmed what they suspected – Phoebe had cerebellar hypoplasia, or “wobbly cat syndrome.”

While others might have seen her condition as a challenge, Stephanie and her husband saw only a cat who deserved love and a safe place to call home.

The condition affects balance and coordination. It isn’t painful, and it doesn’t shorten a cat’s life, but it does make moving around a challenge.

Instead of focusing on what Phoebe could do, the vet suggested something that left everyone shaken: euthanasia.

But the team at Kitty Cat Haven and Rescue refused to accept that. They believed Phoebe’s life had value.

She was alert, bright-eyed, and full of spark. Ending her life wasn’t the answer.

Stephanie agreed completely. That very night, she stayed up researching everything she could about CH cats.

She wanted to be ready to give Phoebe the best possible start in their home.

At first, Phoebe mostly flopped side to side. Walking seemed impossible. But with patient care and some physical therapy exercises, she began to grow stronger.

Slowly but surely, her mobility improved. What was first called a severe case of CH was now considered moderate.

And while she’ll always be a little wobbly, Phoebe has figured out her own way of moving through the world. Stephanie shared on her Instagram profile: 

“She doesn’t walk, she struts!”

And with every little strut, Stephanie’s attachment to Phoebe deepened. When families showed interest in adopting her, Stephanie realized her heart wasn’t ready to let Phoebe go.

She begged her husband to consider keeping her permanently. He hesitated at first, but after watching Phoebe fit seamlessly into their lives, he was convinced.

From then on, Phoebe wasn’t just another foster: she became family.

Stephanie and her husband couldn’t have been happier. They take Phoebe everywhere with them, and she shares their bed at night.

Stephanie calls her the perfect match, while her husband has completely stepped into the role of “special needs cat dad.”

He handles everything from giving her baths to little massages when she needs them.

Phoebe, of course, gives back just as much. Since she was adopted, Stephanie has gone on to foster more than 25 additional cats and kittens.

Phoebe has been there for every foster, watching over them like a little wobbly big sister.

At first, she might hiss when a new foster arrives, but before long, she’s playing and sharing space like she’s always known them.

Because of her condition, Stephanie installed cameras around the house to keep an eye on Phoebe when she’s alone.

But she’s proven again and again that she doesn’t need much. She’s content whether she’s curled up on her own or snuggling close to her humans.

Looking at her today, it’s hard to imagine that Phoebe was once so close to being euthanized. She’s the heart of the home and a constant source of joy.

Phoebe perfectly highlights why it’s worth fighting for animals who need a chance, and she’s also living proof that being different doesn’t make you any less lovable.

Thanks to the determination of Kitty Cat Haven and Rescue and the unwavering love of Stephanie and her husband. Phoebe went from almost losing her life to becoming the center of someone’s world.
