South Carolina Cat Talks Through Buttons And Says Something That Shocks Her Owner
What amazes me most about my cats is how easily they pick up on certain words. The moment I mention ‘dinner,’ ‘food,’ or ‘treat,’ they freeze, lock eyes with me, and burst into meows, sometimes loud enough to echo through the house.
Other words spark equally strong reactions. Say ‘play’ or ‘game’ and their tails flick with excitement.
But mention ‘bath’ or ‘water’ and you’ll get a look of pure betrayal before they dart away. It’s clear they’ve built emotional associations with each word, whether good or bad.
This natural understanding can go even further with the use of pet speech buttons. Nina Leopold, a devoted cat mum from South Carolina, has taken this to the next level with her clever kitty, Flounder, opening up a whole new way of communicating.
Yup, that’s right! Nina taught her feline companion how to talk, which makes Flounder: a talking cat!
That’s definitely not something you hear about every day, right?
In an interview with WJCL News, Nina explained that Flounder’s actions aren’t guesses or coincidences. She knows exactly which button corresponds to what. Nina proudly shared:
“When we have guests over, she’ll kick the guests out. She’ll tell them ‘Stranger. All done. Home. Now.’”
From anger to happiness, Flounder is a master at expressing her emotions, which makes her the purrfect feline companion. Imagine not having to guess what goes on in your kitty’s brain. A literal dream, right?
With so many buttons to choose from, it’s hard to believe that Flounder can always hit the right one.
Surely, she must make mistakes. But one particular video shared by Nina on Flounder’s Instagram convinced me that Flounder doesn’t make mistakes.
However, one particular video of this Bengal cat from South Carolina convinced me of something: Flounder doesn’t make mistakes.
In the video Nina shared on Flounder’s Instagram, the clever kitty approaches the speech buttons and presses the ones for ‘Later’ and ‘Concern.’ Nina responds by asking why she is concerned, and Flounder hits the button for ‘Ouch.’
Worried about her cat, Nina asks if Flounder’s paw hurts, but Flounder responds by pressing ‘Belly.’

Can you believe this? What seemed like just a fun game with speech buttons turned out to be Flounder’s way of telling Nina that her belly hurt.
Though Flounder ended up vomiting, she had at least warned Nina about what was coming. What a smart kitty!
Fortunately, nothing serious was wrong with Flounder. She had probably played too much and eaten too many treats, leading to an upset stomach.
I’m just amazed by her skills, and so is her owner, Nina, who wrote in the video’s description:
“As always, my mind is blown by this little cat and her amazing brain.”
