Texas Cleaning Crew Opens A Flooded Oven, And A Terrified Cat Jumps Out

After the devastating floods that swept through Kerrville, Texas, the local rescue group Kerrville Pets Alive! was already stretched thin, trying to help as many animals as they could.
The entire town had been rocked by the storm, and the stories coming out of it were just heartbreaking.
Then came a call that no one expected.

While picking through the wreckage of a flooded home, a cleanup crew found a stove, and when they opened the door, a terrified cat sprang out.
He didn’t run, though. He just huddled on the porch, too exhausted to move. The cleaning team immediately called the rescue group for help.
Karen Guerriero, cofounder of Kerrville Pets Alive!, was taken aback. A cat… in an oven? After everything they’d already seen, this was a first.

The poor cat was weak, soaking wet, and completely shut down from fear.
But in the middle of so much loss, this little guy was still alive, and that meant something, as Karen shared in an interview:
“At first, I was emotional, then I was elated. We lost so many animals because of the floods. This cat was alive and needed help.”

Karen quickly sent a team to pick him up. No one knows exactly how the cat ended up inside the oven. Karen shared:
“Maybe when the flood rushed through the house, somehow the water opened the oven door, then it closed back up, and he got stuck inside?”
The whole house had been turned upside down by the storm. Nothing made sense anymore. But what mattered was that he’d survived.

The rescue crew rushed him to Freeman-Fritts Vet Clinic & Shelter, where they called the vet, Dr. Shelby Key, even though it was after hours.
Hearing that a cat had been found inside an oven instantly raised red flags. Dr. Key was bracing for the worst.
She rushed over to meet the team, not sure what condition the cat would be in.

And there he was: shaken, skinny, dehydrated, and with burns on his little legs, as Dr. Key explained:
“He was weak, very scared, but mentally in much better shape than I expected. He had lost a ton of weight, was very dehydrated, had burns on his legs, and you could tell that he had been in the water; there was residue on his skin and fur.”
But even with all that, he had fight in him.

Dr. Key started treating him right away. Fluids, medical care, quiet space. And when she offered him a treat, he surprised her.
He scarfed it down like he hadn’t eaten in ages. That one moment said everything. This cat wanted to live.
They gave him a name that made everyone smile through the sadness: Easy Bake. Yeah, a little dark humor, but after so much tragedy, a small laugh helped lift the weight.

Easy Bake is older and has that grumpy little face, like a cranky grandpa. And while he’s still recovering at the clinic, Karen’s trying to track down his family.
The team knows that many families just aren’t in a place yet to reclaim their pets. That’s why they’re offering to board animals, no questions asked.
If someone needs time to get back on their feet, the rescuers will care for their pets in the meantime. Because sometimes helping pets is the best way to help their people, too.
