Smart Dog Jumps 6-Foot Fence To Escape Daycare, Then Rings The Doorbell At His Home In Kansas

Dexter isn’t your average pup. He’s the kind of dog who knows exactly where his heart belongs.
So when his humans, Jeremy and Sarah Henson, left for a vacation in Las Vegas, they probably thought he’d enjoy his little doggy staycation at daycare.
But Dexter? He had other plans.

Three days into his five-day boarding adventure, Dexter decided enough was enough. He had enough of the daycare. He missed home.
He missed the scent of his favorite couch, the sound of the door unlocking, and probably the spot by the window where he could keep an eye on the neighborhood.
So, Dexter pulled off what no one expected: a daring escape.

The fence at the daycare? Six feet tall. But that didn’t stop this determined boy. Whether he leapt over it or climbed, nobody knows for sure.
What’s certain is that he made it out and started the two-mile journey through Kansas streets, driven by one goal: to get home.
He had to turn down 87th Street, navigate traffic, make a left, then a right onto Rose Hill, and wind his way into a residential neighborhood, all by memory.

Ninety minutes later, tired and a little out of breath, Dexter stood at his front door and rang the bell.
Yep. He rang the doorbell.
The security camera picked it up, and his parents, kicking back in Vegas, got the notification.

At first, they probably thought it was just a package. But when they saw the video, their jaws dropped. It was Dexter, waiting for someone to let him in.
Back home in Kansas, though, no one was there to answer the door. Still, Dexter waited like a good boy, believing that someone would come.
That’s what made this so sweet and a little bit heartbreaking. Dexter wasn’t running away from daycare, he was running to something. To his safe place.

He had no idea his owners were a thousand miles away. He just thought they’d open the door and greet him with hugs and belly rubs.
Jeremy later explained how deeply devoted Dexter is, sharing in a YouTube video:
“Obviously he didn’t understand the fact that we were gone. He just thought we were home and he takes his job of protecting us very seriously.”

His parents tried to calm him down through the speaker and then they contacted the daycare, who sent someone over to scoop him up and bring him safely back.
However, the Hensons weren’t all that surprised that Dexter managed to pull this off. This wasn’t just a lucky guess or a random escape, this was Dexter being Dexter. He’s smart, brave, and has a heart that doesn’t quit, as his dad shared:
“He’s very smart and that intelligence can get him into trouble sometimes.”

But that intelligence is exactly what makes Dexter so special. Also, it helps him do incredible things like finding his way through busy streets, dodging danger, and making it all the way back to his front porch.
And really, can anyone blame him? All he wanted was to go home and be with the people he loved. To him, that’s where he belonged.
They say home isn’t just a place; it’s a feeling. And for Dexter, that feeling was stronger than anything else.
