An Unexpected Hero

We often think of dogs as the traditional heroes of the animal kingdom, while cats are sometimes unfairly cast as aloof.

But in one home, a shy feline proved that cats can be just as courageous and fiercely protective of their humans.

Late one night in Bartow, Florida, five people were fast asleep, completely unaware of the danger building inside their home.

A Silent Danger

Downstairs, a simple mistake was quietly turning into a life-threatening emergency.

An oven mitt had been accidentally left on top of the toaster in the kitchen.

As the household slept peacefully, the mitt caught fire, and thick, toxic smoke began to billow through the rooms.

The Only One Awake

Ron Perkins was sound asleep on the living room couch as the smoke slowly spread through the house.

With the rest of the family also tucked in their beds, there was no one awake to notice the growing blaze or sound the alarm.

That is, except for a one-year-old calico cat named Gizmo.

Gizmo, who is usually known around the house for being a bit timid, knew she had to act fast.

“When I opened my eyes, I realized the house was full of smoke,” he recalled.

Thanks to Gizmo’s persistent warning, Ron was able to jump into action immediately.

He quickly extinguished the small fire before it could spread to the rest of the house, saving all five people inside.

The reality of what could have happened if Gizmo had stayed quiet weighed heavily on him.

“I thoroughly believe if she hadn’t woke me up, I’d have been found dead on the sofa this morning,” Ron shared with deep gratitude.

He admitted he had never heard of a cat saving the day like this, but he knows for a fact that she saved them all.

“This cat, I thoroughly believe, gave me one of its own nine lives,” he added.

Today, Gizmo is being hailed as a local hero, though she isn’t letting the newfound fame go to her head.

The sweet calico prefers to retreat to her quiet “fortress of solitude” around the house.
