Gunner the Stunner, the gentle giant with a big heart, is no average dog. This extraordinary American Bully is a loving “mama cat” to a litter of kittens!
It’s not every day you hear about a dog playing such a role, but Gunner took on the job like it was his calling. His story warmed my heart, and I’m sure it’ll bring a smile to your face too.
Known as a “House Hippo” because of his large, cuddly appearance, Gunner challenges the misconceptions surrounding his breed.
American Bullies are often misunderstood due to their size and strength, and even banned in some countries.
That’s why Gunner and his mom have become a fighting voice for the American XL Bully breed, trying to show the world how gentle and sweet these dogs can be.
Despite his size, Gunner’s sweetness and calm demeanor are undeniable.
Whenever he goes out for walks, he’s required to wear a large muzzle. But it’s not to hide aggression – it’s to follow the rules.
Yet, this doesn’t stop Gunner’s fans from adoring him. Beneath that imposing exterior is a dog who simply loves cuddles, naps, and, apparently, kittens.
Gunner’s soft spot for kittens began when his mom decided to foster a pregnant tabby cat.
She needed a calm and supportive environment to bring her kittens into the world. And Gunner’s mom, O.Pavez, hoped her home would offer just that.
What she didn’t expect was for Gunner to play such a crucial role in the journey.
From the moment the tabby arrived, Gunner was curious but gentle. He seemed to understand that she needed space, so he wasn’t pushy at all.
He gave her the time she needed to settle in, watching her with those soft, kind eyes that seemed to say, ‘I’m here if you need me,’ as Pavez shared in an interview:
“He stayed for hours with her being very patient, keeping her company.”
When the big day came and the tabby was ready to give birth, something surprising happened.
Thinking it was best to give her privacy, Pavez moved Gunner out of the room. But as soon as the dog was out, the tabby seemed unsettled and started to cry.
She wasn’t just looking for comfort – she was asking for Gunner!
Realizing the bond between them, Pavez brought Gunner back into the room. The moment he entered, the cat settled down in her box.
It was as if his presence gave her the courage she needed.
Gunner stayed right there, quietly watching over her as she gave birth to her tiny kittens. He didn’t move, didn’t bark, just sat there, offering quiet support.
What happened next was nothing short of magical!
When the kittens arrived, Gunner watched over them with the gentleness of a mother. He lay beside them as they nursed, careful and kind with every movement.
He didn’t try to intervene, but he stayed close. The mama cat seemed to trust him completely, nuzzling him as if to say, “Thank you for being here,” as Pavez shared:
“She loves and trusts him.”
As the kittens grew, Gunner’s role as their guardian only deepened. He remained their constant companion, their protector at all times.
When they started to wobble out of the box, exploring their tiny world, Gunner would lie perfectly still, letting them climb over him, tug at his ears, or bat at his paws with their tiny claws.
Not once did he flinch or grow impatient. The trust between them was unshakable, and their bond was so heartwarming.
And Gunner didn’t stop there. As the kittens began eating solid food, he shared his meals with them, proving just how far his kindness went.
He always seemed to know exactly what they needed, treating them like his own pups, which spoke volumes about his loving heart.
He even watched their mom gently lick them clean and, as if learning from her, started doing it too.
Under Gunner’s watchful eye, the kittens grew strong, playful, and confident. This made it easier for each of them to find their forever homes.
Thanks to Gunner’s love and care, these kittens didn’t just survive – they blossomed into happy, healthy little cats ready to take on the world.
Gunner made all the difference for those tiny kittens, proving that even big, tough-looking dogs can have the gentlest hearts, full of love to share.
