Just before Hazel was about to get spayed, this sweet tabby exited her home one night and returned pregnant.
Her owner Isabel decided to make the best of it so that the entire family couldn’t wait for Hazel’s kittens.
During the entire pregnancy, everything seemed to be quite all right. The vet confirmed that Hazel was healthy, so the family had no reason for concern. However, tragedy struck the night Hazel gave birth.
It turned out she was pregnant with only one kitten and the tiny thing was a stillborn. As Isabel shared in her video:
“The kitten was completely developed so we didn’t know what had gone wrong at the very end of her pregnancy.”
Hazel was so devastated that she spent every night meowing and mourning her kitten. Isabel tried everything in order to provide her comfort, but the poor thing was completely grief-stricken.
Watching her beloved cat in such a desperate state, Isabel knew she had to do something about it.
No matter how much they played with her or cuddled her, Hazel was still depressed. So Isabel came up with an idea.
She took one of her old shirts, that still had her scent on it. She then cut out the exact shape of a kitten and stuffed it. She made a custom stuffed toy that resembled a tiny kitten.
Isabel thought that it would be just a simple toy that would keep Hazel entertained. She had no idea that this tiny toy was about to heal her broken heart.
Hazel started carrying the stuffed kitten around in her mouth, grooming it, and sleeping with it. It seemed like for the first time since her loss, Hazel found a purpose again. As Isabel mentioned:
“It was so sweet and we were so excited, because she stopped crying at night. She became the old Hazel again.”
This little stuffed toy helped Hazel overcome her sadness and grief, all thanks to her loving human mom who came up with the idea.
This story proves to us yet again that cats are emotional animals capable of understanding love and grief.
