How Much Does A Cat Sleep?
Many people envy cats because they can and are allowed to sleep up to 20 hours a day! However, most of them actually sleep around 15 hours daily, and they do most of it during the day.
Cats are naturally crepuscular hunters, so they conserve energy by dozing during the day and becoming active at night. Even though our domesticated cats don’t hunt for food, they still display some hunting behaviors.
Hunting requires a lot of energy, so our cats try to sleep and rest as much as they can during the day, so they have the energy to “hunt” at night. My cats successfully hunt down the socks from the laundry basket every night.
How Much Sleep Does A Cat Need?
Each cat’s sleep needs may vary. Your cat might sleep for about fifteen hours every day, and that will be their normal sleeping schedule. But if you notice significant changes in their sleep patterns, it’s a good idea to talk to your vet.
As kittens, they sleep a lot, and as they grow, they may develop unique sleep schedules. Adult cats typically sleep from twelve to twenty hours a day, while senior cats may sleep even more due to slowed activity.
Why Do Some Cats Sleep Less?
Some cats adjust their sleep patterns to match their owners’ schedules, sleeping more at night.
Cats exposed to lots of light, natural or artificial, may sleep less during the day. Active cats tend to sleep less than others and may adapt to a nighttime sleeping schedule.
What If Cat’s Sleeping Schedule Changes?
If your cat suddenly starts sleeping a lot more or less than usual, it could be a sign of pain or distress. In such cases, it’s essential to consult a vet to rule out any health issues.
