Illinois Man Said ‘Absolutely Not’ To Adopting A Cat, But A Rescued Kitten’s 3 AM Routine Changed Everything
A boyfriend who firmly said ‘absolutely not’ to getting a cat finds himself completely under the spell of a fearless rescue kitten named Bernie.
A Rough Start In The Alley
Evan knew she wanted to bring a cat into her life. But when she brought up the idea to her boyfriend, Dennis, his answer was a firm "absolutely not."
He wasn’t thrilled at the prospect of a feline roommate disrupting their daily routine. However, the universe had a completely different plan in mind for their little family.
Today, Dennis and a spunky rescue kitten named Bernie are completely inseparable. In fact, Evan jokes that when the two of them are together, she doesn’t even exist.
Bernie’s life didn’t begin with cozy couches and endless affection. The tiny kitten was discovered all alone in an alleyway next to a dumpster in Chicago.
He was brought into a local shelter, hoping for a second chance at a good life. During that same week, another solitary kitten named Frankie arrived at the facility.
Though they were not littermates, the shelter staff placed the two lonely kittens in the same cage. It didn’t take long for the pair to become deeply bonded.
The Shelter Surprise
When Evan visited the shelter, she was immediately drawn to the sweet kittens. She walked up to their cage and realized they were a package deal.
The woman who ran the rescue made it clear that Bernie and Frankie were deeply bonded. If Evan wanted to bring one home, she had to take them both.

Once Bernie and Frankie settled into their new home, their distinct personalities began to shine. It quickly became clear that they were total opposites.
Frankie was a bit more reserved and timid, preferring to take things slow. Bernie, on the other hand, was fearless and completely adventurous.
Bernie wasn’t afraid of anything in his new environment. He explored every corner of the house with boundless energy and a curious spirit.
A Wild And Clever Kitten
Bernie quickly proved to be a highly intelligent and mischievous little guy. Just a week or two after coming home, he figured out how to open doors.
His cleverness didn’t stop there. Evan soon caught him opening the air fryer doors, the microwave, and even trying to get into the oven.
He uses his little paws like hands, hooking them onto handles to pull things open. He has even managed to tear down the air vents in his quest for adventure.
Evan lovingly describes him as completely wild, noting that the kittens rarely seem to nap when she’s home.
The Food Thief
Bernie’s fearless nature also extends to meal times. He is notoriously bold when it comes to sneaking a taste of human food.
Evan often finds herself having to pry stolen snacks right out of his mouth. When she does, Bernie is never shy about showing his displeasure.
He gives her an angry little look, squinting his eyes in defiance. He gives her the exact same grumpy expression if she tries to hold him like a baby.
Despite his antics, Evan says he is the best little buddy. She compares his outgoing, involved personality to having a dog around the house.
Demanding Dad’s Attention
While Bernie loves his mom, his relationship with Dennis took a surprising turn. The man who once said "absolutely not" to cats became Bernie’s favorite person.
If Dennis is pacing back and forth on the phone, Bernie won’t let him walk alone. The kitten will run up, jump, and tap Dennis’s legs with his little paw.
Bernie refuses to be ignored. If Dennis isn’t paying attention to him, Bernie will actively seek him out and make sure his dad knows he is there.
The 3 AM Love Spell
Their bond is most obvious in the middle of the night. If Dennis ever falls asleep on the couch, Bernie has a special routine just for him.
At exactly 3:00 AM, Bernie will approach his sleeping dad and initiate what Dennis calls a "love spell." The kitten starts purring incredibly loud, waking Dennis from his sleep.
Bernie will then affectionately rub his face all over Dennis’s face. The two of them will eventually drift back to sleep together in that sweet embrace.
Evan can only smile at how completely the tables have turned. Bernie and Dennis are now officially besties, proving that sometimes the best things in life are the ones we initially resist.
