Cat Spent Years As A Number In Oklahoma Lab, Then One Look Out The Window Changed Everything

For four and a half years, he wasn’t a cat—he was just No. 698 in a toxicity testing lab in Oklahoma. But an unprecedented rescue and a grieving adopter gave this gentle soul the second chance he always deserved.

For four and a half years, he lived inside a toxicity testing laboratory in Oklahoma.

He had no name, no identity, and no one to love him. In that sterile environment, he was simply known as No. 698.

He was one of over 200 dogs and cats used in chemical toxicity tests, their lives measured only in doses and data points.

They were treated as subjects rather than living, breathing animals. But then, something truly extraordinary happened to change their fate.

An Unprecedented Rescue

A non-profit organization called the Beagle Freedom Project stepped in and did something that had never been done before.

Instead of just rescuing a few animals, they actually bought the entire laboratory.

They shut the facility down permanently and transformed the space into a sanctuary.

Overnight, 200 dogs and cats went from being test subjects to survivors, finally safe from the experiments that had defined their lives.

While the animals were safe, they still desperately needed homes. That was when one woman, dealing with her own profound loss, heard about the rescue.

Her beloved dog, Bodie, and her cat, Lentil, had recently passed away, leaving her completely heartbroken.

She wasn’t sure if she was ready to open her heart to another animal, but a quiet feeling told her she needed to try.

She booked a flight to Oklahoma, hoping to find a connection among the survivors.

When she walked into the sanctuary, the atmosphere was heavy. You could feel the desperation on the cats, who were starving for a gentle touch.

Then, she met Bagel. He looked up at her with big blue eyes, and she knew immediately that he was meant to be hers.

She felt certain that Bodie and Lentil had sent him to her to help heal her shattered heart.

Despite coming from a world that had given him so little, Bagel was nothing but a puddle of pure love.

Bringing him home meant taking a flight, which made his new mom incredibly nervous.

In the lab, the only time Bagel had ever been taken out of his cage was to be experimented on. He had never known enrichment, toys, or the outside world.

The second leg of the flight was especially hard on him. He began panicking, his respiration rate skyrocketing as his mom held him close, repeatedly whispering that he was okay.

But the moment they finally walked through the doors of her home, his breathing slowed. It was as if he suddenly understood he was safe.

Stepping Out Of The Shadows

For the first few days, Bagel was highly cautious. He was afraid to leave the bathroom to venture into the bedroom.

He didn’t know what was allowed, or if this new, comfortable world was just a temporary stop on his long road of cages.

Then came the day he looked out the window. His new mom lived right on the beach, offering a wide view of the ocean and the sky.

When Bagel saw the birds flying by, his eyes grew wide with absolute wonder. The world he had been hidden from was finally opening up.

Discovering The Magic Of Play

At first, Bagel had no idea what to do with the basket of toys his mom had bought for him.

But one day, he pushed his whole body into the basket, tipped it over, and simply laid down among the colorful, soft toys.

It was a breakthrough moment where he finally figured out how to be a normal cat and experience joy.

He was equally mesmerized by the bathroom sink. He would sit there for days, staring at the faucet, treating the running water like a genuine miracle.

Bagel’s mom learned that the lab workers had socialized the kittens specifically to make them compliant for experiments, and kept them food-deprived to keep them motivated.

Those early traumas still surfaced occasionally. After his first vet visit, Bagel ran away and hid, refusing to speak to his mom for an entire day.

The probing and poking had likely triggered memories of the researchers in the lab.

She patiently gave him space. By the next day, he returned to her, purring and making biscuits, reassuring her that their bond was still intact.

A Shared Mission Of Empathy

The connection between them runs incredibly deep. Bagel’s mom is a research fellow at a medical school, specifically working to advance animal-free testing technologies.

Bagel is not just her beloved pet; he is a living, breathing reminder of the work she does every single day.

He communicates his gratitude constantly. With a tiny whisper of a voice, he prefers to speak with his paws.

Every morning, he wakes her up by gently pressing his paws into her chest, making biscuits to say, “Good morning, I love you.”

Choosing Love Over Fear

When his mom leaves the house, Bagel still sits and stares at the door, worrying she might not come back. Because of this, she is already planning to get him a feline friend.

She feels as though she was bonded with Bagel long before they ever met, as if they had been waiting for each other all along.

After four and a half years of pain, isolation, and fear, Bagel had every reason to distrust the world.

Instead, he chose love. He chose to believe the world could be kind, and now he gets to spend the rest of his life soaking in the sunshine.
