A Feral Kitten Needs A Home
When a tiny feral kitten named Trout and his siblings were discovered outside a friend’s house, their future was uncertain.
They had been separated from their mother at a very young age and were left to fend for themselves in the elements.
Thankfully, a kind woman named Aubrey stepped in and decided to take Trout into her home, hoping to give him a second chance at a happy life.
An Uncertain First Meeting
Bringing a feral kitten indoors is always a delicate process, especially when there is already a large dog in the house.
Aubrey introduced Trout to her resident dog, Bruce, unsure of how the two rescued animals would react to one another.
At first, Trout was terrified. The tiny kitten looked up at Bruce, let out a defensive hiss, and quickly ducked underneath the bed to hide.
A Quick Change Of Heart
It didn’t take long for the kitten’s natural curiosity to win over his fear.
Within just five minutes of hiding, Trout bravely crawled out from under the bed and hopped up to investigate his new canine brother.
He carefully approached Bruce and started sniffing him. From that exact moment, the tiny kitten fell completely in love.
Seeking A Mother’s Comfort
Aubrey quickly noticed something incredibly touching about their new dynamic.
Because Trout had been taken away from his mother so early in life, he was desperately looking for a maternal bond to make him feel safe.
He actually tried to nurse off of Bruce, finding deep comfort in the dog’s long, fluffy hair. This gentle acceptance created a beautiful, motherly bond between the two.
The “Half-Dog” Cat
Growing up alongside Bruce changed Trout’s personality in some very unexpected ways.
Aubrey says he is by far the most unique cat she has ever met, taking on many dog traits instead of typical feline behaviors because he looks up to Bruce so much.
The family now affectionately calls him a “half-dog, half-cat” because he genuinely tries to act just like his canine hero.
Sharing Every Meal
Their bond is so strong that they even insist on sharing their dining experiences.
During almost every meal, Trout will wander over to share Bruce’s food right out of the bowl.
Instead of getting protective, Bruce makes sure to leave a little bit of room so that they can peacefully eat their pieces together.
Endless Patience
Trout’s absolute favorite activity is rubbing his body all over Bruce’s face to show affection.
Sometimes the dog feels like he’s had enough of the overwhelming feline love, but he never snaps, bites, or shows any sort of aggression.
He simply looks the other direction. When Aubrey redirects Trout, the happy cat just curls up right next to his brother, content to simply be near him.
A Senior Dog’s Dark Past
Bruce’s gentle and patient nature is especially remarkable given his own heartbreaking history.
Aubrey adopted him after he was finally rescued from a puppy mill.
For nearly nine years, Bruce had lived in a shed tucked back in the woods, never knowing the warmth or love of a real home until he met his new family.
Healing Together
Today, the two brothers are completely inseparable. If Aubrey calls Bruce’s name, Trout comes running, and if she calls Trout, Bruce happily trots over.
They both know they want to be wherever the other one is.
