Iowa Homeowner Wakes Up To Furry Thief Stealing His Dog’s Toy

Most mornings in Iowa start quietly, with a cup of coffee, a bit of birdsong, and a peaceful stretch into the day.

But for Nathan Timmel, one recent morning kicked off with a surprise that was anything but ordinary. Instead of waking up to his usual morning routine, he opened his eyes to an unexpected house guest in the middle of a daring heist.

There, in the middle of his living room, was a familiar figure, not a random masked burglar or a suspicious stranger, but his neighbor’s dog, Lucky.

And Lucky wasn’t there just to visit. He was mid-escape, trotting away with a very important prize clutched proudly in his mouth: one of Nathan’s own dog’s favorite toys. As Nathan shared in an interview:

“Lucky made his way into my house to pilfer toys.”

The furry thief had managed to sneak in through an open doggy door, slipping past unnoticed like a seasoned pro. But his escape wasn’t quite as graceful as his entrance.

As Lucky attempted his getaway, toy in mouth, he was hilariously caught in the act, his tail wagging, clearly unbothered by being “caught red-pawed.”

And here’s the twist: Lucky wasn’t working alone.

Nathan didn’t know it at the time, Lucky’s partner in crime: a fellow neighborhood dog named Margot, also infiltrated the house.

She wasn’t caught on camera, likely because she was far more interested in sniffing around than swiping toys. Nathan explained:

“She just wasn’t on camera, because she was finding interesting things to sniff, not interesting toys to steal.”

Turns out, this wasn’t some crime of opportunity. In Nathan’s neighborhood, this kind of thing happens all the time.

Thanks to a communal doggy door system and some very neighborly dog friendships, Lucky, Margot, and even Nathan’s own pup, a dog with the majestic name of Alexander Puppington, are constantly in and out of each other’s homes. As Nathan said:

“Both dogs are in and out of our house non-stop when the doggy door is in, so it happens randomly.”

Luckily for Lucky, Alexander Puppington wasn’t home during the toy heist. He was off visiting yet another neighborhood dog, completely unaware that his favorite toy was being spirited away by a so-called “friend.”

One can only imagine his reaction if he’d returned to find his toy gone.

But in this neighborhood, there’s no room for jealousy. Just wagging tails, open doors, and shared toys. As he shared:

“Lucky and Margot are both welcome whenever they want to visit.”

So while Lucky might not be the stealthiest toy thief on the block, he’s certainly one of the most charming. And in a community where the dogs treat every house like home, a missing toy isn’t a tragedy, it’s just another chapter in their daily adventures.

And Nathan Timmel? He wouldn’t have it any other way. As funny as the video is, one comment made me laugh out loud:

“Me sitting here yelling Pivot, Pivot, Pivot!!! While turning my head sideways.”

Hilarious! Check out the video below:
