Kittens are full of curiosity and wonder. They often wander into places where danger quietly waits. Most of the time, they escape with nothing more than a scare.

But for one tiny kitten in Maryland, curiosity almost cost him his life when he crossed paths with a lawnmower at the worst possible moment.

The little one was rushed to Frederick Co. Animal Control in Maryland, badly injured and in desperate need of help.

The accident had left him with fractured forearms, deep cuts along his back and chest, and part of his ear and tail torn away.

The vets who examined him admitted it was a miracle he had survived at all. But while his body was broken, his spirit wasn’t.

Even lying on the exam table, the kitten remained calm and sweet, as if he somehow knew the people around him were trying to save him. His bravery inspired everyone who cared for him.

The shelter staff made sure he had everything he needed, from pain relief to round-the-clock attention.

Still, they knew he would need even more specialized care if he was going to have a real chance.

That’s when they reached out to Ellen, a rescuer whose foundation focuses on fragile, vulnerable kittens. Without a moment’s hesitation, Ellen agreed to take him in.

At first, the kitten was called Johnny Deere, after the lawnmower that had almost taken his life. But Ellen gave him a new name, sharing in an interview:

“We renamed him Johnny 2 Sticks in homage to the movie Johnny Stecchino (‘toothpick’) because his little splints looked like toothpicks.”

With his splints secured, Johnny began his long road to recovery. To Ellen’s surprise, he handled it all with remarkable patience.

He would curl up in her lap for naps, purring happily despite the bandages and splints on his tiny legs. He didn’t flinch when it was time for the splints to be replaced, nor did he ever sulk or withdraw, as Ellen shared:

“Not once did he complain or act depressed. He was always active, happy, and loving.”

Week by week, Johnny grew stronger. Within two weeks, his X-rays showed that his fractures were healing beautifully.

Soon after, the splints came off, and Johnny embraced his newfound freedom with the energy of a kitten making up for lost time.

He darted around the house, climbing, running, and playing with the unstoppable spirit. As his body healed, so did his confidence.

Ellen introduced him to the other resident cats, and while Johnny puffed his tail at first, it didn’t take long before he was weaving among them as if he’d always been part of the group.

Playful, bold, and endlessly curious, he quickly earned a reputation for being the little troublemaker of the house. Ellen shared:

Currently, his favorite thing to do is boss around the other cats in the home and get into as much trouble as possible. He is never sitting still.”

Johnny’s transformation was nothing short of incredible. He may be small, but he carries the heart of a lion.

Now fully healed and full of life, Johnny is waiting for the next chapter: a forever home where he can continue to charm, entertain, and inspire.
