Utah Rescuers Rally Around A Kitten Facing An Open-Chest Surgery, Then They Witness A Miracle
When Piglet arrived at the Best Friends Lifesaving Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, with his mother and siblings, everything seemed hopeful. The little family was sent to a foster home where they could grow stronger and get ready for adoption.
But while the other kittens thrived, Piglet began to struggle. His condition worsened in ways that weren’t obvious at first, until a sharp-eyed foster volunteer sensed something wasn’t right.
Trusting their instincts, they acted fast, and that decision became the reason Piglet got a second chance at life.
The foster volunteer soon realized something was wrong with this tiny tuxedo kitten. Each time he nursed, he would inhale milk into his lungs and end up vomiting after every feeding.
A closer veterinary exam revealed the cause: Piglet had a condition called megaesophagus.
As explained by PetMD, this condition involves the widening of the esophagus, the muscular tube that carries food and liquid to the stomach.
Because the muscles can’t move things along properly, food and liquid fail to reach the stomach as they should. Piglet’s situation quickly became more serious when he started having trouble breathing and grew very weak.
Alarmed, his foster parent rushed him to an emergency veterinary clinic, desperate to get him the help he needed.
A CT scan revealed Piglet had a persistent right aortic arch, which is a congenital condition that constricts the esophagus. Best Friends vet, Dr. Megan McCarthy explained:
“Food could not travel to the stomach as it usually would. He was in dire need of surgery to correct that.”
Piglet’s only chance of survival was an emergency open-chest surgery. His caretakers worried deeply about his fragile size and young age, but this tiny fighter proved just how strong he was by making it through the procedure.
Once back in his foster home, Piglet began the long path toward healing. But recovery wasn’t easy – it came with challenges and setbacks that tested both him and his caregivers along the way.
After surgery, Piglet had to follow a strict recovery routine. He wore a little sweater to protect his sutures and had to be fed while sitting upright, staying that way for half an hour after every meal.
For an energetic young kitten, staying still that long was no simple task. Thankfully, his foster parents were patient and resourceful.
They came up with clever ways to raise his food bowl and gently encouraged him to remain upright, making sure he stayed safe and comfortable through each feeding.
Thanks to their efforts, Piglet began to eat normally within weeks, showcasing his indomitable spirit. Dr. Megan was overjoyed:
“We’re very happy that he survived, and we’re so glad we could get him the help that he needed.”
After enduring so much, finding a forever home was the easiest thing for Piglet. He quickly captured the heart of a loving family, who couldn’t wait to shower him with all the love and attention.
Along with the love of his new family, Piglet also gained a feline sister – an orange cat named Starling – who quickly became his closest companion.
Against all odds, this resilient little kitten pulled through, and today he’s flourishing in his forever home, enjoying a happy, carefree life surrounded by the people and pets who adore him most.
