When Kelly DeWeese from Owensboro, Kentucky, set out for her usual jog one day, she had no idea she’d find an adorable kitten that would forever change her life.
As she jogged through a cornfield a few miles from her home, trying to deal with the grief of losing her mother, she noticed a tiny abandoned calico kitten. The little feline’s fragile appearance made Kelly pause.
Seeing no other kittens or a mother cat around, Kelly carefully approached, expecting the kitten to bolt. To her surprise, the kitten showed no fear and seemed very friendly. From that moment on, their adventure begins…
The Story Of A Unique Kitty Who Defied The Odds
Noticing that the kitten was visibly in rough shape, with weepy eyes, a flea-covered body, ear mites, and a hoarse meow, Kelly decided to scoop her up and take her home. She knew this kitten desperately needed someone to save her.
At home, Kelly gave the kitten a bath, named her “Snickers” after a candy wrapper she found on the ground next to her, and got her ready for a vet visit the next morning.
Kelly also took a few pictures of Snickers to post online or make flyers, hoping someone might be looking for their lost kitten.
After a thorough examination at the clinic, the vet said that the 5-month-old Snickers had a sinus infection. He prescribed a round of antibiotics to treat her.
Despite following the treatment plan and making several return visits to the vet, Snickers’ condition didn’t improve.
With no one stepping forward to claim her, Kelly had a tough decision to make. She could either agree to put the kitten down or adopt her and fund the costly visit to a specialist to uncover the root cause of Snickers’ ailments.
Believing that finding Snickers was a sign from her late mom, Kelly decided to adopt the kitten and do everything she could to help her recover.
The specialist they needed to see was a two-hour drive away in Louisville, Kentucky. A CT scan revealed that Snickers had large polyps in her inner ears and behind her eyes.
She’d need two major surgeries to remove them, which were six weeks apart from one another and very expensive. However, Kelly was determined to see them through.
The first surgery went well, but the second didn’t go as smoothly.
During the second procedure, a polyp fell into Snickers’ throat, causing her to lose consciousness for about 15 seconds. The team performed CPR, revived her, and safely removed the polyp.
But those seconds of unconsciousness had consequences: Snickers woke up blind.
Once again, the vet asked Kelly if she’d rather put Snickers down, as caring for a blind cat could be challenging. However, Kelly was too attached to let her go.
Kelly was shocked when one day she noticed that Snickers, who was supposed to be blind, was reacting to visual cues. After about six weeks, Snickers started tracking a toy that Kelly waved in front of her.
Kelly rushed her to the vet, who confirmed: Snickers’ vision was back!
From that point on, her condition only got better. She grew healthy and strong, and today she’s one happy and special kitty.
The Sweet Life Of A Smiling Kitty And Her Lovely Mom
Kelly always believed that meeting Snickers was meant to be. The little fluffball came into her life just when she needed it, almost as if her late mom had sent Snickers to keep her company during one of the hardest times in her life.
In a way, Kelly and Snickers saved each other! In a video made by Cats and Kittens, Kelly says:
“I’ve always felt that my mother was watching out for me. She knew I needed Snickers as much as Snickers needed me.”
Today, they are a happy pair, always enjoying their time together.
Kelly describes her feline friend as “one of the most unique-looking cats she’s ever seen.” With her striking facial markings and smiley expression, it’s hard to disagree with Kelly – Snickers really is a one-of-a-kind and beautiful cat!
This charming kitty loves to play fetch, explore around the house, watch TV, or just cuddle with her mom on the couch. She’s a pro at mimicking the way Kelly sits and follows her every step.
Snickers even has her own Instagram account (run by Kelly, of course), where she spreads joy and positivity with every post. If you need a daily dose of feline cuteness, give her a follow. Trust me, you won’t regret it.
She’s also on TikTok and Facebook, so be sure to check her out there, too.
