Massachusetts Cat Lost A Leg And Tail, But Her Shelter Send-Off Stunned Her New Family

After losing part of her leg and tail to a severe infection, a tiny cat named Mochi waited for a second chance. When her new family finally arrived, the shelter staff’s tearful goodbye proved just how special she truly was.

A Difficult Beginning

Greg was never really a cat person. Like many people, he had heard the stereotypes that felines were cold, distant, and aloof. He always considered himself a dog person through and through.

But sometimes, it only takes one special animal to completely change a person’s perspective. For Greg and his partner Natalia, that animal was a tiny, resilient cat who had already survived more than most pets do in a lifetime.

Mochi was originally bred in China and purchased by a family in the Boston area, where she was initially named Dollar. Unfortunately, her early days were fraught with medical struggles.

She developed a severe infection that threatened her life. Needing urgent help, she ended up at the MSPCA, a local animal rescue.

The infection took a heavy toll on the little cat.

To save her life, veterinarians had to amputate part of her leg and her tail. She spent the next two months at the shelter, slowly healing and learning how to navigate the world in her new body.

Despite the trauma and the physical changes, her sweet spirit never faded. She spent her days recovering under the watchful eyes of the dedicated shelter staff.

The Call That Changed Everything

Meanwhile, Greg and Natalia were actively looking to rescue a pet.

The MSPCA reached out to let them know they had been selected to adopt Mochi. Natalia was ecstatic, yelling around the house in pure joy.

Greg tried to play the role of the calm, collected dad. He gently suggested they should meet the cat first before getting too excited.

The couple’s attempt at staying calm vanished the moment they walked into the shelter.

They fell in love with Mochi immediately. But it was the reaction of the shelter employees that truly surprised them.

The staff members were visibly emotional, with some even tearing up as they prepared to say goodbye. They looked at Greg and Natalia and asked, “Do you guys realize you won the lottery?”

During her two months in medical care, Mochi had bonded deeply with everyone around her. She had left a huge impact on the people who saved her life.

When Greg and Natalia finally brought her home, she weighed just under two and a half pounds. She even smelled a bit like sulfur from her medical treatments.

But her new parents didn’t care about any of that. After just a few weeks, she was totally fine and settling into her new life beautifully.

Quirks And Hide-And-Seek

Within a short time, Mochi was completely healthy, full of energy, and thriving.

She bonded with Greg and Natalia incredibly fast, showing off a sweet and affectionate personality. She also revealed a playful side, frequently trying to bait her parents into games of hide-and-seek.

She loves poking her fluffy head around corners to catch their attention. She also became quite vocal, which was a delightful surprise to her new family.

Because of her missing tail and leg, Mochi has a unique way of moving.

She has a bit of a challenge running in a straight line, often sidewinding around the house like a little snake. Her parents joke that she is totally shapeless, resembling a little ball of fur.

With her big, curious eyes and fluffy coat, strangers often tell them she looks just like an owl. Despite her physical differences, Mochi just thinks she is a normal cat.

A Converted Dog Person

Greg’s days of being strictly a dog person are officially over.

Now, the very first thing he does when he wakes up is check on Mochi to make sure she has everything she needs. He proudly claims she is a “daddy’s girl,” though Natalia is quick to debate that title.

Natalia insists Mochi is a mama’s girl, especially since the little cat insists on sleeping right on her head at night. Greg admits he gets a little jealous of their nighttime cuddles.

Living Her Best Life

To help feed her curious nature, the couple is planning to get a clear backpack so they can take her on safe outdoor walks to see the world.

They marvel at her resilience, noting that she flew on planes from China, survived a shelter stay, and fought through major surgery. They believe everyone should strive to be a little bit more like Mochi.

Now that she finally has stability, Mochi spends every day showing her family just how grateful she is. Greg and Natalia simply can’t wait to watch their strong little fighter grow up and live her absolute best life.
