NY Cat Was Scheduled To Be Put Down For Being Shy, But One Simple Kitchen Tool Changed Everything
When an 11-year-old shelter cat hid behind a dresser in his new home, his adopter used a clever and gentle trick to win his heart and help him heal.
Out Of Time And Out Of Hope
For an older cat in a crowded shelter, being timid can be a dangerous trait.
Marcel, an 11-year-old feline, found himself completely shut down in his kennel. His fear was so overwhelming that he was scheduled to be put down simply because he was too shy to connect with potential adopters.
Thankfully, the humane society stepped in just in time. They pulled the frightened senior cat from the euthanasia list and placed him in a fantastic foster home to decompress.
It was there that a kindhearted woman saw his photo and knew she had to give him a chance.
Choosing The Oldest Cat
When looking for a companion, many adopters gravitate toward playful kittens. Marcel’s new mom took the opposite approach.
She specifically chose him because he was the oldest cat waiting at the shelter.
Despite his age, he was a beautiful, well-kept cat. She strongly suspected he hadn’t been a stray for his whole life.
“I want to assume he was left, you know when some people move and they leave their cats behind?” she shared. “He didn’t look like he was a cat that had been on the street for 11 years.”
Hiding In The Shadows
Bringing a traumatized cat into a new environment requires immense patience. When Marcel first arrived at his new home, his instincts told him to hide.
He immediately retreated behind his new mom’s dresser, seeking the safety of the dark, enclosed space.
She didn’t force him to come out. Instead, she sat near him, making sure he knew he wasn’t alone.
She could still access him, but she knew that reaching out with a bare hand might overwhelm the terrified senior.
The Wooden Spoon Trick
To bridge the gap between them, Marcel’s mom came up with a brilliant and gentle idea.
She grabbed a simple wooden spoon from her kitchen and used it as an extension of her arm.
By gently stroking his head with the smooth wood, she was able to offer affection without the direct pressure of physical touch.
The trick worked perfectly. As the spoon gently rubbed his fur, Marcel began giving her slow, sleepy blinks—a universal feline sign of trust.
A 3 A.M. Breakthrough
The real turning point came much sooner than anyone expected.
On their very first night together, his mom woke up at 3:00 in the morning to a heartwarming surprise.
Marcel had crept out from behind the dresser and was sitting quietly at the foot of her bed.
She stayed awake and took the time to gently pet him. For the first time, he started purring and making happy “hand biscuits” in the blankets.
From Shy To Demanding
Once Marcel realized he was safe, his true personality blossomed. The “shy” cat who was nearly put down turned out to be a massive cuddle bug.
“Marcel is a big baby,” his mom laughed. “He loves to be loved.”
In fact, he quickly became playfully jealous of the other cats in the house.
If she tries to pet another cat, Marcel marches right up. “He comes up and is like, ‘Why aren’t you petting me? Like, you have two hands,'” she joked.
Healing A Broken Heart
Marcel’s adoption didn’t just save his life; it ended up saving his mom’s heart, too.
When her beloved previous cat, Omar, passed away, she was left grieving and heartbroken.
Sensing her sadness, Marcel stepped up to comfort her. “He’s like, ‘Okay, I’m gonna cuddle you,'” she recalled.
He even began sleeping in the exact same position that Omar used to sleep in, offering her a familiar source of comfort during a difficult time.
A Peaceful Forever
Marcel never replaced Omar, but he took on a special role in the household, helping his mom find joy again.
Today, their bond is built on deep mutual trust. They spend their days exchanging slow blinks and peacefully watching each other go about their routines.
“I’m his forever mom. I think he knows that. I think he knew that from the beginning,” she smiled.
Looking back at the terrified cat hiding behind the dresser, she couldn’t be happier with the loving companion he has become. “I would just tell him how proud I am of him because he has come a really, really long way in such a short amount of time.”
