Bobo The Cat Retires From His Role As New York’s Beloved Store Manager

Bobo’s story began in New York’s Chinatown, where he first arrived at a local shop not because of fame or attention, but simply because he needed a place to call home.

Homeless and without a family, Bobo was taken in by one of the store’s employees, who thought it would be temporary at first. The plan was only to give him shelter until something more permanent came along.
But fate had something else in mind. What started as a short stay quickly blossomed into something far more special. Bobo found not just a roof over his head but a role he seemed destined to fill.

With his ginger fur, curious eyes, and calm demeanour, he became the store’s self-appointed “manager.” From the moment he settled in, Bobo gave the shop a sense of warmth and personality that customers soon came to adore.

For years, anyone who visited the Chinatown store was greeted by Bobo. He had an uncanny way of making each person feel noticed, whether by sitting near the entrance, watching attentively from the window, or offering a friendly nuzzle to those who stopped to say hello.
His routine never faltered — he never took a day off. Rain or shine, Bobo was there, carrying out his quiet duties as the face of the store.

His owner, Liao, affectionately called him “the king of the store,” a fitting title for a cat who ruled with kindness rather than authority. Curious yet gentle, Bobo seemed to strike the perfect balance between playful charm and calming presence.
Regulars stopped by not only for their shopping but also for the chance to see him. In a city as fast-paced as New York, Bobo offered a moment of pause, a reminder of the simple joy animals can bring.

As the years went on, Bobo’s popularity grew. His daily life as store manager was even documented on Instagram, where countless fans followed along, eager to catch a glimpse of his latest activities. Through photos and updates, people near and far came to know the little ginger cat who had made Chinatown his kingdom.
After nearly a decade of loyal “service,” Bobo eventually retired from his shop duties. Instead of spending his days greeting customers, he enjoyed a quieter life at home with Liao.

Retirement suited him well. No longer needing to oversee the store, he basked in the comfort of being cared for, enjoying naps in sunny spots and the affection of those who loved him most.
Bobo lived a long, remarkable life and recently passed away at the age of 18. As they shared in an Instagram post:
“With heavy hearts, we say goodbye to our beloved cat, Bobo, who lived to the age of 18. Bobo started his journey as a store cat, spending his days in a small corner of the shop, managing his employees and checking inventory. He was a crowd favorite with tourists coming from all over to visit him. He worked diligently and never took a single day off for 9 years. He then retired into a forever home where he provided even more love and joy to his fur parents.”

His absence is deeply felt, not only by Liao and the many customers who grew attached to him, but also by the wider community who followed his journey online.
His story is a reminder of how animals, even in the simplest of ways, can touch lives and create lasting memories.

Though he may no longer be watching from the store window, Bobo will always be remembered as Chinatown’s iconic cat — a gentle soul who turned a shop into a home and strangers into friends.
