Oklahoma Dog Refused To Stay In Her Own Yard, And The Reason Changed A Grieving Family Forever
A grieving couple wasn’t ready for a new dog, but a persistent neighbor’s pup had other plans.
An Unexpected Visitor

A couple weeks after Seth and Crystal lost their beloved dog, Dooney, a new furry face appeared in their yard. The grieving couple had zero intention of getting close to another dog.
But Bella, the neighbor’s dog, had other plans. She just sat in the yard, staring at them literally all day.
Seth was sitting on the back porch, feeling upset and missing Dooney, when Bella made her move. She would wait until he wasn’t looking, and then she would take a few steps closer.
A Comforting Presence

By the end of that first day, Seth was able to give Bella a little head scratch. It seemed like the sweet dog knew exactly what he needed.
"She definitely had some kind of sixth sense," Seth recalled. "She knew that I was going through something, and her being there and her being around definitely brought a good level of comfort to me."
Soon, Bella started coming over more frequently. The couple was initially confused about how she was even getting into their yard.
Breaking Down Barriers

At first, Bella was digging holes under the fence to get to her new friends. The couple kept blocking the holes, but Bella was determined.
She eventually just broke off the bottom part of a plank on the fence to make her own permanent doggy door.
Seth and Crystal were trying to maintain a healthy distance because they were still grieving the loss of Dooney. They didn’t want another dog, but Bella was making it hard to resist her charm.
Morning Greetings

Their relationship with Bella started as just visiting, but it soon morphed into something more. Bella didn’t want to go back home.
The couple would wake up in the morning to find that Bella had slept on their back porch all night long, just waiting to see them.
"Looking back on it, it was really her saying to us, ‘Look, I’m a really good girl. I just want to be over here with you,’" Seth said.
A Temporary Arrangement

One day, the neighbors sent a text saying they were moving. They asked if Seth and Crystal would mind watching Bella while they got settled in.
Crystal immediately agreed. They were happy to have Bella around, even if it was just temporary.
However, after the first week of Bella spending the night, the neighbors hadn’t checked in on her at all. The days turned into weeks, and Bella became a fixture in their home.
In Denial

Crystal admitted she was in denial about how attached she was getting to Bella. She was still telling herself she didn’t want another dog.
But after over a month had passed with no word from the neighbors, they started to think they might never hear from them again.
Then, out of nowhere, they received a random text. The neighbors said they were coming to pick Bella up that day.
A New Grieving Process

The couple was caught off guard. They asked what time the neighbors were coming and if they were taking Bella back for good, but they weren’t given a definitive answer.
After the neighbors took Bella away, Seth and Crystal had a sudden realization. "Oh, no, she needs to be part of our life, and she is that important to us," they realized.
Seth reached out to the neighbors, offering to pay an adoption fee to keep Bella. But they heard nothing back, and the silence was torturous. They were now going through a new grieving process.
A Surreal Reunion

A couple of weeks later, the neighbors finally reached out. They asked if Seth and Crystal would be willing to buy Bella.
The answer was an absolute yes. When Bella finally came back to them, she was shaking with excitement.
"It was very surreal after we got her back," Seth said. "Like, I can’t believe she’s here."
Full Circle

That first morning back was beautiful, with Bella’s "helicopter tail" wagging non-stop. The happiness and love shared between the dog and her new family was undeniable.
Crystal noted that the way Bella looks at Seth is exactly how Dooney used to look at him—just enamored.
To mark the beginning of their new life together, they decided to get the fence fixed. It was the final bit of physical and metaphorical closure, a sign that Bella was officially theirs and there was no going back.
