Some cats are simply chatty, and others not so much. However, the feline star of today’s story has taken “being vocal” to a whole new level.
Meet Donut, a one-of-a-kind cat who is well known for startling his owners with surprise pounces and loud, ear-piercing screams at all hours.
Donut is undoubtedly equal parts comedian and chaos agent. He is the kind of cat who can turn an ordinary morning into a full-blown horror movie scene – at least that is according to his owners.
But behind his over-the-top theatrics lies an unexpected reason for all the noise.

Understanding Donut’s Screams
For the longest time, Donut’s owners, Liam and Petra, have been worried about their cat’s loud screams – which somehow always seemed louder and more dramatic at the crack of dawn.
After one too many mornings of being jolted awake like they were in the middle of a horror movie, they decided it was time for a vet visit to make sure nothing serious was going on.
To their shock, the vet’s verdict came back: Donut was deaf!
Apparently, he’d been that way since birth – it just took Liam and Petra over 10 months to figure it out.
They had always assumed their feline roommate was just extremely sassy and far too independent to acknowledge their existence (which, to be fair, is still partly true).
As it turns out, all that volume was simply because Donut couldn’t hear himself.
Despite his deafness, Donut maintained a playful and lively relationship with his owners. They chased each other around the house every day, enjoying the bond they shared.
Learning about his condition didn’t change that connection. In fact, it helped Liam and Petra better understand Donut’s needs. As they shared in an interview:
“It’s not really changed much our relationship with him. Now we know how to cater to a deaf cat.”
Those loud, unapologetic yowls that once startled them in the middle of the night eventually became a familiar part of the household’s daily soundtrack.
They learned to be gentle with Donut when waking him or calling his name, tapping softly near him to get his attention without startling him. As they explained:
“You have to be a little bit careful because it’s so easy to scare him.”
Over time, they also became skilled at reading his body language. A dramatic meow paired with a tail flick or an expectant look told them exactly what Donut wanted.
Luckily, Donut’s loud outbursts weren’t due to any serious health issues. This energetic kitty was simply deaf all along, and his owners embraced that fact with love and understanding.
