When Becca from Yaqui Animal Rescue in Texas first saw Butters’ picture on a local rescue page, his eyes tugged at her heart. There was a sadness in them like he didn’t understand what had happened to him.

His body looked still and that worried her. He couldn’t walk, and no one knew why. Becca’s heart sank just imagining how scared and helpless he must have felt.

So she and her team went to bring him in. At first, they thought he might’ve been hit by a car. But the truth turned out to be far worse.

A visit to the vet revealed that Butters had a bullet lodged in his spine. Someone had shot him.

That tiny body had carried so much pain, but through it all, he still looked at people with trust and hope, as Becca shared in a YouTube video:

“He has always been so trusting which is so surprising. You could just tell that this dog was full of life. He was not ready to give up.”

Becca had never worked with a paralyzed dog before, but she was determined to help this poor guy. So, she started looking for a rescue that specialized in animals like him.

She reached out to 17 different places, hoping someone would say yes. And someone did.

The woman from this rescue claimed she had experience, said she worked with vets, and promised she could help. So, they sent Butters to that rescue, hoping for the best.

However, Becca felt in her gut that something wasn’t right. That feeling only grew stronger when, after a month and a half, the updates stopped.

Becca didn’t back down. She kept digging and eventually tracked down the woman’s real name and address.

All the clues pointed to one devastating truth: Butters had ended up in a fake rescue.

Becca immediately called the humane society and the police too. She did everything she could to get Butters back because she knew he needed her.

She rushed over and the moment she arrived, everything fell into place. The so-called rescue was a heartbreaking mess.

Over 60 special needs dogs were being hoarded, living in filthy, crowded conditions. Now, thanks to Butters, all of them were rescued.

When Becca finally brought Butters home, it felt like a piece of her heart had been returned. And this time, she wasn’t letting go.

She had already made up her mind that Butters was family now, as she shared:

“I decided that we were going to adopt him even before he came back. But we made sure that when he came home that we were with him as much as we possibly could. And our bond has just become stronger.”

Even after everything he’s been through, Butters is still the happiest little guy around. He’s playful, silly, and always ready for a belly rub.

He doesn’t let anything stop him. Not the past, not the pain, not even his paralyzed legs. His wheels might carry him now, but his spirit runs free.

Butters is finally living the life he always deserved. Check out his journey in this video.
