What Looked Like A Pile Of Fur On A Puerto Rico Roadside Was Actually A Family In Need
Some mornings start out so ordinary, you don’t expect anything special. Just a quick drive, a doctor’s visit, and home again. But every now and then, life surprises you in the best possible way.
That’s exactly what happened to Dellymar Bernal one day in Puerto Rico. She was driving along a quiet rural road when something unusual by the roadside made her stop.
Right there, at a small intersection, was what looked like a pile of wiggling fur, ten tiny puppies, tails wagging and eyes wide.

Their little tails spun like propellers, and their faces were so full of hope that Dellymar’s heart melted instantly. In that moment, she knew her day had taken a whole new direction.
As the director of a local animal rescue, Dellymar was used to seeing strays. Her shelter was already overflowing.
But this wasn’t a rescue she could turn away from, not when ten trusting puppies were sitting right there, surrounded by empty food bowls, waiting for someone to care.

One of them, a tan puppy later named Luna, barked as if she was speaking for the whole group. In an interview, Dellymar recalled:
“The dog who was barking and wagging her tail, honestly, she stole my heart with her pure face. When I saw them, I was in shock. I opened the door and they all came to greet me. They were all wagging their tails, happy to see me …”
The puppies surrounded her car, pressing tiny noses against her legs, wagging and bouncing with pure joy. For dogs that had clearly been abandoned, they were still so trusting, so full of love.
That’s what broke her heart most. Friendly pups like these almost always once had a home.

Later, neighbours confirmed her suspicion, the puppies had been dumped there several days earlier.
“At some point, they had a home. I know they were abandoned because it’s a really isolated area. When we posted about them, the neighbors commented that they had been abandoned and had spent a few days there.”
Determined to help, Dellymar gently gathered the litter one by one and tucked them safely into her car. Nine went straight to the shelter. The tenth, a tiny pup named Lirio, had a badly injured back paw and needed immediate vet care.

X-rays revealed several fractures, but thanks to an incredible veterinary team, Lirio began her road to recovery.
Meanwhile, her siblings, Lorenzo, Luna, Lisa, Luisa, Lilypads, Lance, and Liliard, quickly settled into the shelter, showing their playful personalities.
It didn’t take long for adoption applications to pour in.
Soon, Luna’s cheerful bark took her all the way to Boston, Lisa found a loving family in New York, and several others went off to happy new homes.

Today, only two pups remain at the shelter, brave little Lirio, who’s still healing, and Lorenzo, who’s awaiting eye surgery. Once they’re healthy, they too will be ready to start new lives with families of their own.
Dellymar never planned to rescue a whole litter that day. But sometimes life puts a family of wagging tails right in your path, and you just can’t say no.
Because of her compassion, ten abandoned puppies went from a roadside in Puerto Rico to a future filled with love, safety, and the happy homes they always deserved.
