Pennsylvania Cat Lived 12 Years In A Rabbit Cage, Then One Woman Gave Her The World

A senior cat named Luna spent 12 years in a hoarding situation, confined to a small rabbit cage. When one woman saw her at a shelter, she knew she had to take a chance on giving her a beautiful, rule-free life.

A year after she adopted Ollie, Julie decided to celebrate his birthday in a special way.

She headed to the Animal Rescue League to drop off some donations in his name.

She had no idea that a quick trip to the shelter would change her life, and the life of a very special senior cat.

While at the shelter, Julie noticed a senior cat named Luna.

Luna was the very last female cat left in the facility.

Shelter staff explained that most people passed right over her.

She was older, had some bathroom issues, and carried the heavy weight of a difficult past.

Taking A Chance

Because of her age and her history, no one was willing to take a chance on Luna.

But as Julie looked at her, she felt an immediate connection.

She knew right then that she absolutely needed to be the one to give this cat a chance.

Julie decided to bring Luna home.

The moment Luna arrived at her new home, her true personality blossomed.

She instantly rolled onto her back, showing her tummy and wanting to play.

Julie was amazed by how quickly the senior cat opened up.

“What kind of cat are you? Who are you? This is incredible,” Julie thought.

A Fast Friendship

By later that same night, Luna was already trying to play with her new brother, Ollie.

She was completely wide open to being a part of this family.

The very next day, the two cats were snuggling together on the couch.

Years later, they still snuggle all the time, completely devoted to one another.

A Heartbreaking Past

As Luna settled in, Julie learned the heartbreaking details of the cat’s past.

Luna had been rescued from a hoarding house.

For 12 long years, she had been forced to live in a small rabbit cage.

Her teeth were broken from drinking out of a rabbit feeder water bottle, and the white fur on her paws was deeply stained from living in her own filth.

A Life Without Limits

Julie felt a deep hurt for what Luna had endured for over a decade.

Because she had been confined for so long, Julie made a promise.

She wanted the rest of Luna’s life to be one of “no rules, no confinements.”

She wanted Luna to have the world as hers—to spread out, run, jump, sleep, and play wherever she pleased.

A Bond Like No Other

The bond between Julie and Luna grew incredibly strong.

In fact, during her wedding vows the previous year, Julie told her husband, “You know, I’ll always love Luna a little bit more than you.”

Her husband completely understood, and they both agreed that it was okay.

Luna had become the absolute center of Julie’s world.

Facing Senior Challenges

As Luna approached her 18th birthday, she began facing some health challenges.

She developed dementia, sometimes staring at walls or crying in the middle of the night.

In August, she also entered stage two kidney disease and experienced some weight loss.

Despite the hard moments, Julie remains fiercely dedicated to her care, scheduling ultrasounds and making sure she is comfortable.

No Regrets

Julie only adopts senior cats, knowing their time is shorter but their need for love is immense.

Every single day, she tells Luna and Ollie that they are the most important beings on the planet.

She knows that saying goodbye is the inevitable truth of adopting seniors.

But because she spends every day making them feel important and loved, she knows she will never have any regrets.
