After Years Of Being Overlooked In Texas Shelter, Senior Deaf Cat Gets Her Happily Ever After

Many senior cats find themselves in shelters, uncertain about what the future holds.

Younger cats, full of energy, often catch people’s attention first, leaving the older ones overlooked. Yet, those seniors still have so much love to give.

Cali, a striking calico with bright green eyes, was one of those left behind at the City of San Antonio Animal Care Services in Texas.

She was deaf and had only a few teeth remaining, which made her appear past her prime.

But behind it all, she carried a heart full of love, simply waiting for the right person to notice her.

Just as Cali’s hope was beginning to fade, the right person walked into her life. A woman named Bridgid Staub was on the lookout for a new companion, but she wanted someone truly special, not just an ordinary pet.

After completing medical treatment, Bridgid felt there was an emptiness in her life, one that only the comfort of a furry friend could fill.

She felt like something was missing, so after thinking it over, she chose to go to a shelter, hoping to bond with any of the cats there. As she shared in an interview:

“I felt incomplete. After a lot of thought, I decided to go down to my city’s animal services shelter to see if I connected with any of the cats.”

When Bridgid visited the San Antonio shelter, she wanted to know which cat had been waiting the longest for a home. That’s when she met Cali – the senior calico who would soon steal her heart.

Once she was free to roam around, Cali let out a loud and unique ‘meow’, which brought a smile to Bridgid’s face after a while. She believed it was meant to be, as she mentioned:

“She was a beautiful calico cat with huge green eyes. When she was let out of her cage, she immediately let out a very loud and different-sounding ‘meow.’ This made me smile for the first time in a while.”

Cali soon felt at ease with Bridgid, as if she was showing her approval. She immediately nudged Bridgid’s hand for some pets, then settled down happily to enjoy the scratches. Bridgid continued:

“After she got her sip of water, she focused her attention on me. She headbutted my hand until I pet her and then she laid down and curled up, enjoying my scratches.”

As the two spent time together at the shelter, their connection grew almost instantly. A strong bond formed, and from that point forward, they were inseparable.

Just a few days later, Cali left the shelter behind for good. But settling into her new home wasn’t immediate.

The strange environment left her uneasy, and she stayed on edge, unsure of what to expect. That first night proved challenging for both Cali and Bridgid.

Cali’s anxiety prevented her from sleeping, and Bridgid worried about her new furry friend, as she mentioned:

“She didn’t sleep at all the first night. She was so hyper-vigilant and anxious about her new surroundings.”

However, when morning came, something amazing happened. Cali decided to curl up on Bridgid’s lap and peacefully drift off to sleep. She continued:

“The next morning it was as if a light had been switched on. She curled up on my lap while I was on the couch and fell asleep.”

Since then, Cali has turned into a complete cuddlebug. She sleeps peacefully all night, sometimes beside Bridgid, and even shares her pillow.

Bridgid often reflected on who truly rescued whom and eventually realized it was Cali who saved her.

The sweet calico filled her life with joy, and Bridgid was deeply grateful for the choice she had made to adopt her.

She admitted it might sound a little cliché, but she wholeheartedly believed it – while she gave Cali a safe and loving home, Cali gave her healing and happiness in return. Bridgid added:

“She brings so much joy into my life and I am so thankful that I decided to adopt.”

I believe Cali had an endless amount of love left to give; she was simply waiting for the right person to find her. The way her story unfolded is truly heartwarming, and every moment of it feels special.

Senior cats like Cali are often overlooked, yet they still carry so much love and warmth within them.

Opening your heart to an older cat can be incredibly rewarding – they have the power to bring joy, comfort, and companionship in the most wonderful ways.
