Senior Deaf Cat Spends Years In Texas Shelter Before Finding Her Forever Human

Many older cats find themselves in shelters, unsure of what their future holds. People typically gravitate toward younger cats full of energy, leaving the seniors behind. Despite this, these older cats still have so much love to give.

Cali, a lovely calico cat with striking green eyes, was one of those overlooked seniors at the City of San Antonio Animal Care Services in Texas.

She was deaf and had only a few teeth left, leading people to believe she was beyond her prime. But beneath it all, she had a loving heart, patiently waiting for the right person to find her.

Just when Cali was starting to lose hope, her savior appeared at the perfect time. Bridgid Staub, a woman looking for a new furry companion, wasn’t interested in just any pet – she wanted something special.

After undergoing medical treatment, Bridgid felt an emptiness that only a cat could fill.

Something was missing in her life, so after some reflection, she decided to visit a shelter, hoping to connect with one of the cats there. As she mentioned in an interview:

“I felt incomplete. After a lot of thought, I decided to go down to my city’s animal services shelter to see if I connected with any of the cats.”

When Bridgid arrived at the animal shelter in San Antonio, Texas, she was eager to discover which cat had been there the longest. That’s when she met Cali, a cat who would soon steal her heart.

As Cali roamed around, she let out a distinctive, loud “meow” that eventually brought a smile to Bridgid’s face. She felt like it was fate, as she later shared:

“She was a beautiful calico cat with huge green eyes. When she was let out of her cage, she immediately let out a very loud and different-sounding ‘meow.’ This made me smile for the first time in a while.”

Cali quickly relaxed around Bridgid, almost as if she were giving her approval. She nudged Bridgid’s hand for some attention, then happily settled down to enjoy the scratches. Bridgid recalled:

“After she got her sip of water, she focused her attention on me. She headbutted my hand until I pet her and then she laid down and curled up, enjoying my scritches.”

After spending some time together at the shelter, they formed an immediate and strong connection, falling in love with each other. From that day forward, they became inseparable.

After a couple of days, Cali said goodbye to the shelter forever. However, the adjustment to a new home didn’t happen right away.

Cali felt overwhelmed by unfamiliar surroundings and was constantly on high alert. The first night was difficult for both of them.

Cali’s anxiety prevented her from sleeping, and Bridgid worried about her new furry friend, as she mentioned:

“She didn’t sleep at all the first night. She was so hyper-vigilant and anxious about her new surroundings.”

However, when morning came, something amazing happened. Cali decided to curl up on Bridgid’s lap and peacefully drift off to sleep. She continued:

“The next morning it was as if a light had been switched on. She curled up on my lap while I was on the couch and fell asleep.”

Since then, Cali turned into a complete cuddlebug. She sleeps peacefully all night, sometimes beside Bridgid, and even shares her pillow.

Bridgid often reflected on who really saved whom and eventually came to a conclusion: Cali saved her.

She brought so much joy into her life, and Bridgid is incredibly grateful she made the decision to adopt her.As Bridgid put it:

“She brings so much joy into my life and I am so thankful that I decided to adopt.”

This cat clearly had a lot of love to give, just waiting for the right person to come along. The way this story unfolded is truly heartwarming, and I loved every moment of it.

Though older cats like Cali often go unnoticed, they still have so much affection to offer. So, why not consider opening your heart to a senior cat? They can bring endless joy and love into your life!
