It’s always tough when someone has to say goodbye to a pet they can’t keep anymore. Life throws curveballs, and sometimes people find themselves in situations where they just can’t care for their animals the way they want to.
Not long ago, this heartbreaking situation happened in North Carolina, when the Asheville Humane Society found two kittens left outside their door.
Along with them, there was a note – one that was full of love but also sadness, as the former owners explained they couldn’t give them the life they deserved.
The note read:
“This is not what we wanted to do, but we can’t give them the life they deserve. Please take care of them, we do love them.”
It’s hard to imagine the pain the owners must have felt, but the shelter’s response was incredibly warm and understanding.
They posted on social media, acknowledging the tough decision the owners had made and letting them know they weren’t being judged.
Instead of focusing on the abandonment, they focused on the love the owners had for the kittens and their need for help, sharing on Facebook:
“Thank you for entrusting us with pets you clearly love… Surrendering a pet is an excruciating decision to make. Please know that we are responding with no anger, no resentment, no ill will – just a hope that we can help, someway, somehow.”
They offered their full support to the former owners, letting them know that if they needed help to keep the little ones, the shelter was there, as they shared:
“If you want to, we will do everything in our power to give you what you need to stay together. Food, medical care, counseling, whatever you need – we’ll make it happen… We don’t have any judgment, just a LOT of cat food.”
Even though the owners haven’t yet reached out, the kittens, now named Aurora and Villa, are doing just fine. They’ve adjusted to their new environment, and the shelter staff has fallen in love with them. They are being showered with love and care.
If no one comes forward to claim the kittens, the shelter will find them new homes where they can be loved and cherished.
The Asheville Humane Society is making sure that, no matter what, this story will have a happy ending, sharing:
“Your kittens are currently receiving every ounce of love you requested from our animal care staff. They’ve become shelter favorites… If reuniting you isn’t possible, they’ll find the right place and the right person. Their story will continue – and it’ll be a happy one.”
People were deeply moved by the shelter’s response. Comments flooded in praising their staff for their kindness and understanding. One person wrote:
“I applaud Asheville Humane Society for seeing the human side of this and offering a solution. We are so quick to judge before knowing the why. Bravo.”
And another added:
“Your act of kindness without judgment restores my faith in humanity. Thank you for being here on this planet Earth.”
Even if the kittens never reunite with their former family, the love and care they’re receiving show that doing the right thing means offering compassion without judgment.
The shelter’s willingness to offer help without criticism not only gives hope to the kittens but also to the people who may have been struggling with a difficult decision.
It’s easy to judge from the outside, but true kindness comes from recognizing that life can be complicated, and sometimes the hardest choices are made with the best intentions.
In the end, the kittens will find their way to happiness, and so will the people who loved them enough to seek help.
