Over 50 Families Apply To Adopt Two Special Kittens At Massachusetts Shelter

Animal shelters are often the last hope for animals searching for their forever homes. They provide safety, care, and a second chance at life.
While many shelter residents are mixed breeds, it might surprise some to know that purebred animals also find their way through those doors. Sadly, not even a prestigious pedigree protects them from being abandoned.
If fortune is on their side, these purebred animals end up in the hands of dedicated shelter staff who work to match them with the right adopters—people who can appreciate their needs and offer a stable, loving home.
This was exactly the case at the Scituate Animal Shelter of Massachusetts , where staff were met with an unexpected situation. One day, a person arrived with three young kittens in tow, ready to surrender them.
The shelter staff knew they couldn’t refuse. Turning the kittens away might have meant sending them into an uncertain or dangerous future, so they welcomed the trio without hesitation.
It only took a single glance for everyone to be completely charmed. These weren’t just any kittens — they had a striking appearance and sweet personalities that made them stand out right away.
Amanda Eddy Baker, the shelter’s director of programs and operations, explained in an interview:
“You could call it a ‘cartoon moment’ – when eyes bugged and little hearts formed. I’d never seen kittens like that.”
Inside the box were three curly-haired kittens of the Selkirk Rex breed. These unique kittens stood out immediately. Amanda added:
“The staff was shocked, in the most delighted way. We see so many kittens each year, but I tell you, it never gets old.”
Fortunately, the kittens were in good health and grew bigger and stronger with each passing day, gradually revealing their distinct personalities.
Not long after they settled in, the three Selkirk kittens were ready to begin their search for forever homes. That’s when something remarkable happened.
The Scituate Animal Shelter isn’t a large operation — they usually handle about 500 adoptions annually and work hard to highlight each animal so the right people can find them.
But in this case, there was no need for extra effort. The Selkirk kittens seemed to work their own magic, attracting interest without a single promotional push.
As soon as the shelter posted about the kittens looking for their forever homes, their inbox exploded. Amanda shared:
“We had roughly 50 people email, which is A LOT for us. I man the emails, and they were literally rolling in.”
However, that wasn’t the most shocking part. Staff members quickly gathered around to find the kittens their perfect match.
Incredibly, just 13 minutes after the shelter posted about the kittens, all three had been adopted — a record-breaking moment for the team.
Staff could hardly believe it, but they knew one thing for certain: each kitten was heading to a truly great home. Amanda shared,
“We are very optimistic they will be amazing cats. They were already super social when they came in, a great sign.”
Now, the trio is settling into their forever homes, ready to begin a new chapter surrounded by love and care — exactly what they deserve.
This story is a wonderful reminder that you never know what treasures you might find at a shelter. From playful kittens to wise senior cats, and from mixed breeds to purebreds, every animal is worthy of a loving home. Often, the ones overlooked the longest turn out to bring the greatest joy and love into your life.
