Starving Cat From Detroit Follows His Intuition And It Leads Him To A Safe Haven
Rescue groups spend years working tirelessly to help countless cats and kittens, but in this case, one clever feline chose to find help on his own.
One morning, Liz Haack, the shelter manager at Detroit Community Cat Rescue (DCCR), was surprised to hear a cat crying loudly from the backyard.
She looked out of the window only to see an orange and white cat who had somehow found his way to the shelter, all by himself. Liz shared in an interview:
“Apparently, he knew right where to come. I ran outside to the driveway with a can of food.”
As soon as he heard the sound of a can being opened, the ginger cat bolted straight toward Liz.
Clearly famished, he devoured the food as if he hadn’t eaten in days, yet he still managed to be unbelievably sweet and affectionate. Liz knew he needed their help, so she said:
“I quickly got permission from the director to try to bring him in. He let me pick him up with no issues and seemed so happy to be taken inside.”
The rescue team decided to call the affectionate ginger boy Sigmund, or Siggy for short. After a check-up, the vets estimated that he was between three and five years old.
Siggy quickly won everyone over with his bold and lively personality.
From the very first day at the shelter, he made his presence known, chatting away and confidently seeking out affection, almost as if he already understood he was finally somewhere safe. Liz said:
“He was very outgoing. Even when I brought him inside, he was never shy or nervous. He was very vocal and demanded pets whenever someone was around at the shelter. He is one of the sweetest cats ever.”
Sadly, Siggy tested positive for FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus), however, that didn’t stop him from transforming into a cuddly and content feline. Liz added:
“This guy is a total beefcake meets playful sweetheart. He loves getting brushed, and gets lots of attention. He does not love other male cats, and when you stop petting him on his giant head.”
While staying at the Detroit shelter, Siggy waited with patience and hope for the right person to come along and give him a home.
His wish didn’t come true right away, but after several months, a young man came across his story and was instantly moved.
Completely taken with Siggy, he knew he wanted to give him the happy life he deserved.
With his adoption application approved, Siggy finally left the shelter and headed off to start a brand-new chapter with his devoted new friend.
Siggy couldn’t be happier with his new human in his loving forever home. Liz added with delight:
“Siggy waited a long time for the right person to walk into our shelter, to realize that FIV+ cats are deserving of love as well. We are so glad his time has come.”
These days, Siggy spends his time racing happily around his very own home before curling up in his human’s lap, soaking up affection and enjoying endless cuddle sessions.
If Siggy hadn’t wandered to the shelter that day, it’s hard to imagine what might have happened to him.
Thankfully, luck was on his side, and now this sweet boy is enjoying a happily ever after of his own.
