It is not uncommon for felines to develop an unusual obsession, especially with their owners. Every cat parent loves when their fluffball adores them – usually because that admiration is reciprocated.
However, the problem arises when you find yourself not as the sole object of your cat’s admiration but rather a close second (or even third).
A very special cat mom found herself in a similar situation because she was forced to share her fluffball with her husband and – believe it or not – potatoes!
Here’s the story about Anshu, her husband, and their toothless senior kitty Nugget.
Love Triangle (Or Should I Say Quadrangle?)
Anshu and her husband adopted Nugget as a senior feline. She said that from the first day, he stepped his little paws into their home, Nugget became obsessed with her husband.
It didn’t take them long to become best buddies, which made Anshu a bit jealous at first. She said:
“He’s always waiting for his dad to come home, or he meows. They don’t like being away from each other.”
Apparently, Anshu wanted to get a cat for several years, but every time she’d mention that to her husband he’d say, “No!”
However, when Nugget came into their lives – her husband fell head over heels for him!
Anshu admitted that, despite not being Nugget’s number one human, getting a cat was the best decision she made for her husband.
“He’s always picking him up and playing with him. They love playing hide-and-seek.”
Apart from adoring Anshu’s husband, they noticed Nugget had another weird fixation he was equally passionate about – potatoes! Anshu shared:
“No matter where they are, he would always go sit where the potatoes were stored.”
Many people online believe Nugget’s potato obsession was staged and that Anshu was actually placing them in his vicinity, so she could make him Internet famous.
And while in some rare cases that might have been partially true, no one can deny that Nugget’s favorite resting place was undeniably the potato cabinet.
It’s true: Nugget was a true potato aficionado! His favorite song verse to purr along to must have been, “I like big taters and I cannot lie. You otha kitties can’t deny.” At least that’s how I like to imagine it.
A Farewell To Potato Feline
We all know that even the best stories eventually have to end.
Unfortunately, in July 2023, Nugget left his beloved potato cabinet for good and crossed the Rainbow Bridge.
After a challenging year and a half of battling feline osteosarcoma, enduring countless treatments, taking medications, and dealing with the inevitable effects of old age, Nugget bid farewell to his beloved owners and took off to potato paradise.
In the description of this video, Anshu wrote:
“I am sorry we couldn’t do more for you, my baby. I love you so much, and I am still hearing your purr next to me. I know you’re watching over us. You have been so strong. You watched us grow, became our best friend. (…) Mummy and daddy will always be with you. Rest in peace and happiness, my Nuggie. No more medicine, no more drama, no more vet visits. Just run free and happy.”
I hope this article encouraged you to think about adopting a senior feline. They are worthy of our love and care and can be just as quirky and fun as younger kitties – as Nugget so purrfectly demonstrated.
