Utah Dog Was Passed Over For A Year Because He Was ‘Too Stoic’, Then The Right Person Walked In
After his original owner fell on hard times, a sweet dog named Hank spent nearly a year bouncing between homes. Adopters kept passing him by because he was simply too well-mannered, until one fateful meeting changed everything.
A Gentle Soul Adrift
Hank was a dog who had lost the only life he knew when his original owner fell on hard times. With nowhere else to go, he ended up in the unusual position of being cared for by a senior cat rescue.
He spent four or five months with one family, and then another five months with a different foster home. For almost an entire year, this sweet boy was just floating, waiting for a family to finally choose him.
The Curse Of Being Too Good
The reason Hank was waiting so long for a forever home was surprisingly heartbreaking.
He couldn’t get adopted because he was simply too well-mannered. When potential adopters came to meet him, they were often met with a dog who was incredibly stoic.
Instead of running up, jumping around, or begging for attention, Hank would just sit patiently and wait. People felt uncomfortable because they couldn’t read his body language, assuming he just didn’t want to connect.
A Destined Meeting
A woman named Annie finally crossed paths with Hank because her friend’s mother was fostering him.
When Annie first met the quiet dog, she didn’t think he disliked her at all. Instead, she thought he was an absolute gentleman.
At the time, Annie was going through an incredibly difficult emotional period. Her soul dog of 13 years, a senior pup named Bill, was getting ready to pass away, and she was dreading the goodbye.
Winning Over A Grumpy Senior
Introducing a new dog to a senior pet is always a delicate process, especially in Bill’s case.
Bill was very old, in a lot of pain, and wasn’t necessarily super dog-friendly at that stage in his life. Annie knew it was a risk to bring another animal into his space.
But when Bill met Hank, the unexpected happened. The grumpy senior dog immediately liked him.
Seeing that instant bond, Annie knew right then that Hank was meant to be her dog. It felt like absolute destiny.
Waiting For Permission To Live
Once Hank was officially adopted, his true personality slowly began to blossom, but he still carried the weight of his past.
One habit absolutely broke Annie’s heart. Whenever she took him out, Hank wouldn’t go and greet anyone initially.
He would hover and wait until he was explicitly given permission to do anything. He was so unsure about what he was allowed to do, and if he was even allowed to have friends.
Only after Annie gave him the okay would he finally go say hi to people, other dogs, and even cats.
Honoring A Legacy
Eventually, the heartbreaking day came when Bill passed away.
To honor her beloved soul dog, Annie decided she wanted to foster another dog in need. She ended up picking up Beverly, a dog who had been left abandoned in a park.
Hank immediately stepped up to welcome the new arrival. He completely fell in love with Beverly, and the two dogs began doing absolutely everything together.
They became inseparable, always cuddling up and finding comfort in one another’s presence.
The Dog Version Of Danny DeVito
With time, love, and a permanent home, the stoic shell completely melted away.
Annie discovered that Hank is actually a goofy, silly dog with a gigantic head, floppy little ears, and a huge smile that he wears all the time. Someone even joked that he looks like the dog version of Danny DeVito.
He also became a beloved fixture at Annie’s husband’s tattoo shop. Hank loves to go into the shop, snuggle with the clients, and sit right by them while they get tattooed.
He also loves to sleep and “bake” in the sun, which eventually earned him a spot on a weight management plan with a strict exercise regimen.
A Bluetooth Connection
Today, Annie and Hank share a bond that she describes as being like a “Bluetooth pairing.”
When she wakes up, he is always waiting for her. If she ever has a nightmare, she wakes up to find him sitting up on the bed, watching over her.
Losing Bill was the hardest thing Annie ever went through, but Hank snuggled with them both at the end and made that terrible transition bearable.
Now, Annie just wants Hank to know that he will be cared for, loved, and given the freedom to live his best life until the very end. After a year of waiting, he finally has the family he always deserved.
