Working as a vet, Aly had seen her fair share of heartbreaking cases. But there was something about Kora that hit differently.

It wasn’t even her shift that day when the emergency call came in: a young Great Pyrenees had been hit by a work truck.

The family who brought her in was devastated. Kora was supposed to be their farm dog, but now, broken and injured, she couldn’t do that anymore.

They didn’t know the full extent of her trauma, but they knew keeping her would be too much financiAly, physicAly, and emotionAly.

And so, with heavy hearts, her owners started thinking about humane euthanasia.

But before that decision was final, Aly’s coworkers reached out, asking her to come and see Kora. Even though it was her day off, she didn’t hesitate.

Something told her she needed to be there.

The moment she walked into the room, Aly’s heart softened. This big, fluffy puppy with soulful eyes and a busted-up body wagged her tail like she hadn’t just been through something awful.

She was just a baby who’d been dealt a terrible hand. And still, she wanted to love.

Aly spoke with the family. They were kind, torn up about the whole thing. They wanted the best for Kora, even if that meant letting her go. But Aly had another idea.

And just like that, Kora became part of Aly’s life.

The next few days were chaotic. Kora needed major orthopedic surgery if they had any chance of saving her leg. She was transferred to specialists and stayed in the hospital for about a week.

Her surgery cost a lot, around $3,000 to $4,000, plus everything else from the hospital stay to medication.

But Aly didn’t flinch. She was determined to do whatever it took to give this pup a second chance at life.

When Aly and her husband finAly brought her home, there was one thing they had to keep in mind: Kora had never been inside a house before.

She’d lived outdoors her whole life. But once she stepped through that front door, it was like she’d always belonged.

She made herself at home right away and was so gentle with their cats. The couple had several rescue animals, and Kora embraced them all, soaking in the warmth of a real family.

In the beginning, Kora couldn’t have many treats because of all the meds she was on. But once she healed up, they slowly started giving her little snacks.

And oh man, Kora loved them. She’d close her eyes, savor every bite, and do that funny little thing where she moved the treat across her palate like it was a five-star meal.

It was adorable!

Today, Kora runs and plays like nothing ever happened. Her leg is strong, and her spirit is even stronger.

And when the sun goes down and something strange stirs outside, she’s the first one on alert, ready to guard her family. That livestock guardian instinct is still in her bones.

But more than that, Kora is her parents’ shadow. She’s always close by, always watching. And her bond with Aly’s husband? They’re best buddies, for sure.

Sometimes, Aly wishes she could explain it all to Kora. How much she’s loved and how lucky they feel to have her.

Kora’s not just a dog, they call her their ‘happy crazy lady.’ And honestly, that feels just right.
