South Carolina Couple Uses Construction Cone To Rescue Little Creature Struggling In Ocean
It was supposed to be a normal walk along a pier in South Carolina, the kind of peaceful moment you don’t think twice about.
But for Elizabeth Heffron and William DeLeo, that walk quickly turned into something they’ll probably never forget.
While looking out over the Atlantic Ocean, the couple noticed something unusual in the water below.
A raccoon.
At first, they laughed at the strange sight of the animal floating and trying to keep itself afloat in the open water. But that changed quickly.
As they kept watching, the raccoon began drifting farther away from the pier, clearly struggling to stay above the surface. That’s when concern set in. Heffron can be heard asking in the footage:
“Do you think he’s okay?”
It was clear the animal was in trouble, and the couple knew they couldn’t just stand there and watch. DeLeo quickly came up with a plan.
Using what they had on hand, he grabbed a long orange traffic cone and tied it to a belt, lowering it carefully over the edge of the pier. Then he reached down toward the raccoon.
The exhausted animal didn’t hesitate. It immediately grabbed onto the cone with both front paws, clinging tightly as DeLeo began to pull him up. Heffron says:
“Hold on, buddy. Slowly, slowly.”
For a moment, it seemed like it was working. But just as they got close to bringing the raccoon to safety, he slipped.
There was a brief, heartbreaking splash as the animal fell back into the water. Still, the couple didn’t give up.
DeLeo reset the cone and tried again, carefully lowering it back toward the struggling raccoon. This time, everything went differently.
The raccoon grabbed on once more, and with steady movements, DeLeo slowly pulled him closer and closer to the pier’s edge. Step by step, the animal was finally brought up to safety.
Even then, the rescue wasn’t over yet. The raccoon clung tightly to the railing, clearly shaken and unsure of what was happening. The bystanders gave him time, watching carefully so he wouldn’t slip again.
Eventually, the raccoon calmed enough to be guided fully to safety. Heffron can be heard saying softly as the moment finally settled:
“It’s okay.”
The video quickly went viral, gaining more than 120,000 likes, with viewers praising the couple’s determination and patience. One commenter wrote.
“Thank you so much for not giving up!!”
Another pointed out just how terrified the animal must have been, noting:
“The way he kept holding onto the cone at the end to make sure he was safe.”
In the end, what started as an ordinary walk turned into a rescue neither of them expected, and a reminder that sometimes, even the simplest tools and a little persistence can make all the difference.
