Florida Firefighters Rush To Save A Dog From Canal And Are Surprised By What They Pull Out

When firefighters in Cape Coral, Florida, received a call about a dog struggling in a canal, the rescue seemed fairly straightforward. An animal was trapped in the water and needed help.

But as crews arrived at Britannia Lake and got a closer look, they realized this rescue was going to be anything but ordinary. The animal was clearly exhausted, but it wasn’t making things easy for its rescuers.

Every time firefighters tried to approach, it swam from one side of the canal to the other, desperately searching for a way out. For a while, nobody could get close enough to help.

Fortunately, a local woman named Denae Judd happened to be kayaking nearby and decided to assist. Rather than leaving the scene, Judd stayed with the animal and carefully monitored its movements from the water.

Her help soon proved invaluable.

Eventually, the frightened animal disappeared beneath a dock and squeezed into a tight space underneath. Judd immediately alerted firefighters to its location, giving them the information they needed to move in.

What followed was a rescue that required plenty of patience.

A firefighter wearing a life jacket carefully entered the water and worked his way beneath the dock. Hidden among the beams was the exhausted animal, clinging to safety after what must have been a terrifying ordeal.

Finally, rescuers were able to reach it. But when they pulled the animal out, they realized something surprising.

The “dog” everyone had been talking about wasn’t a dog at all. It was a young coyote. The Cape Coral Fire Department shares in a Facebook post:

“Firefighters entered the water and were able to extract what turned out to be a coyote pup from the space. It was exhausted from its ventures and unable to be released.”

Photos from the rescue showed firefighters carrying the soaked pup back to shore, where it could finally rest. The little coyote appeared completely worn out after its struggle in the canal.

No one knows exactly how the pup ended up in the water. It’s also unclear whether any members of its family were nearby. What is known is that several people came together to help.

The department later revealed that a neighbor named Brian had actually witnessed the coyote fall into the canal and even jumped into the water himself in an attempt to rescue it.

His efforts helped alert others to the situation, eventually leading to the 911 call that brought firefighters to the scene.

Meanwhile, Judd’s persistence played a major role in locating the frightened animal once it disappeared beneath the dock.

To recognize their efforts, the fire department later presented both residents with Community Recognition Coins.

After the rescue, firefighters transported the coyote pup to East West Veterinary Care Center, where staff helped coordinate its transfer to the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW).

There, the young animal could receive the care and monitoring it needed before eventually returning to the wild.

Photos shared after the rescue showed the pup wrapped in blankets and drying off safely in a crate, a far cry from the exhausted animal struggling in the canal just hours earlier.

What began as a call about a dog quickly turned into a rescue no one expected.

And thanks to a group of determined neighbors, a helpful kayaker, and a team of firefighters willing to climb into the water, one young coyote got the second chance it desperately needed.
