When a tiny black and white kitten was snatched from her adoption enclosure, rescuers feared the worst. They never expected her to turn up in the middle of a bizarre bank robbery.
A Waiting Game
Magnolia, a three-month-old black and white kitten, was simply waiting for her second chance at life.
Safe in her adoption enclosure at a Pet Supplies Plus store in Beltsville, Maryland, she spent her days watching customers come and go.
Like many rescue kittens, she was hoping the right person would walk through the doors and offer her a loving, safe home.
But on one very unusual morning, Magnolia’s journey to a forever family took a wild and unexpected detour.
A Familiar Face
For a couple of weeks, store employees had noticed a particular man visiting the shop.
He came in nearly every single day, and he always made a beeline straight for the kitten adoption area.
To the staff, it seemed like he was just an admirer who had taken a special liking to little Magnolia.
They had no idea that his daily visits were actually leading up to a shocking plan.
The Sudden Grab
On the morning of the incident, the man walked into the store wearing a light-colored t-shirt and a black beanie.
Seeing that the store team wasn’t near the front, he quickly made his move.
Someone had managed to use a key hanging nearby to unlock the secure cat adoption area.
Within seconds, security cameras captured the man running out of the store, clutching the tiny black and white kitten in his arms.
A Frantic Phone Call
Around 10:30 a.m., Stephanie Stullich of the Beltsville Community Cats Rescue received an alarming phone call.
A panicked store employee explained that Magnolia had just been stolen right out of her kennel.
Fearing for the three-month-old kitten’s safety, Stullich dropped everything and immediately drove over to the shopping center.
She was prepared to search the area, but she was completely unprepared for the scene waiting for her.
A Massive Response
When Stullich pulled up to the shopping center, she was greeted by a sea of flashing lights.
“I immediately saw all of these police cars,” she recalled. “And I thought, wow, that’s a heck of a response for a stolen cat.”
However, she soon realized the police weren’t swarming the pet store.
Instead, the heavy police presence was focused entirely on the PNC Bank located in the exact same shopping center.
The Strangest Dispatch Call
Witnesses had seen the man run out of the pet store and head straight for the bank.
This led to what reporters described as one of the strangest police radio calls ever recorded for a robbery.
The dispatcher alerted units to a male suspect in his mid-20s wearing a yellow shirt and a black beanie.
Then came the unbelievable detail: the suspect “possibly has a cat with him.”
An Unbelievable Hand-Off
Inside the bank, the situation was just as bizarre as the radio call suggested.
The man had walked right up to a bank employee with the tiny kitten still cradled in his arms.
According to police, he looked at the employee and casually asked, “Can you hold this?”
After handing over the kitten, he proceeded to write a note demanding cash and handed it to the teller.
Safe, Sound, And Waiting
Fortunately, police arrived on the scene in just minutes and took the man into custody.
Through all the chaos, flashing lights, and confusion, little Magnolia came through the ordeal completely unharmed.
Prince George’s County Police ensured the scene was secure, and the brave kitten was safely returned to her rescuers.
Now, Magnolia is back to looking for a forever home, specifically seeking a “law-abiding citizen” with plenty of love to give.
