Rhode Island Teacher Brings Her Cat To School, And He Instantly Becomes A Celebrity
Pinecone the cat looks a little spooky, but this middle school art class quickly learned that you can’t judge a book by its cover.
A Cat With A Bigger Purpose

When Kaylee Smith first welcomed Pinecone into her home, she quickly realized he was not your average feline.
As an art teacher at a middle school, she knew the daily struggles and stresses her students faced.
She also knew that Pinecone had a remarkably calm demeanor that seemed almost too good to keep to herself.
She felt strongly that he wasn’t just going to be a part of her life, but that he was meant to be a part of many people’s lives.
A One-Period Experiment

Hoping to share Pinecone’s gentle energy, Kaylee asked her school principal for a special favor.
She was granted permission to bring the cat to school for just one period as a fun reward for her students.
As soon as he arrived in the classroom, she noticed an immediate shift in the room’s atmosphere.
The kids responded to him so well that Kaylee knew this couldn’t be a one-time event.
The King Of The Classroom

After getting permission to have him in the school more often, Pinecone quickly made himself right at home.
He established his own routine, sometimes even greeting students right at the classroom door.
When he isn’t welcoming the kids, he likes to climb up on top of the shelves to oversee the entire room.
The students started calling him the king of the classroom, joking that he acts more like the principal.
He struts around the room like he owns the school, completely comfortable being the main attraction.
A Unique Appearance

While Pinecone’s personality is incredibly sweet, his physical appearance often catches people off guard.
He has a distinct, permanently grumpy expression that has earned him plenty of affectionate nicknames.
His most striking feature is a pair of little fangs that stick up from his bottom jaw.
Kaylee describes him as a “reverse vampire cat,” a look that makes him undeniably unique.
For some middle schoolers, his unusual face can actually be a little intimidating at first glance.
Learning Not To Judge

Because of his fangs and grumpy face, some kids have openly expressed that he looks a little spooky or scary.
Kaylee uses these moments as a gentle teaching opportunity in her art room.
She reminds her students that you can’t always judge a book by its cover, especially when it comes to animals.
Once the kids spend just a few minutes with him, their initial fears completely melt away.
They quickly discover that the spooky-looking cat is actually the nicest feline anyone has ever met.
The Art Room Assistant

Despite his friendly nature, Pinecone is surprisingly not a lap cat.
Instead of demanding to be held, he prefers to be an active participant in the students’ creative process.
He will often jump up onto the art tables and look around to see exactly what the kids are working on.
He chooses a specific table or a specific student and simply lays down right next to their artwork.
His quiet presence provides a steady, calming companion while they focus on their projects.
A Moment To Breathe

Middle school can be an incredibly overwhelming time, filled with academic pressure and social anxiety.
For many of Kaylee’s students, Pinecone offers a rare chance to just stop and breathe during a chaotic day.
Sometimes the kids don’t even want to talk; they just need something comforting to sit next to them.
Even students who aren’t cat people or who have allergies are respected, as they can simply choose to ignore him.
But for those who need it, petting Pinecone several times throughout the class makes a world of difference.
Ready For The School Day

Pinecone’s love for the students is entirely mutual, and he looks forward to his time in the classroom.
On mornings when Kaylee hasn’t even planned to bring him, he will walk right over to his travel carrier.
Sometimes he even jumps inside and falls asleep by the door, making it clear he is ready to go to work.
He has become Kaylee’s little teammate, and she trusts him completely with her students.
For this teacher, the most special part of the journey is watching Pinecone transform from being just her pet to belonging to the entire school.
