Our feline friends are incredible creatures, each with their unique personalities and quirks. They’re known for their agility, stealth, and remarkable abilities, but they can find themselves in tough spots just like we do.
This is the story of a beautiful dilute tortoiseshell cat who went missing for two long weeks and was discovered stuck high up in a tree.
The Rescue Mission
The hero of our story is a woman named Holly Young, and her trusty sidekick, Nugget the dog. It all began during one of their routine walks. While strolling through their neighborhood, Holly noticed something unusual.
All the dogs in the neighborhood were barking so loud that she barely heard soft and quiet meows somewhere around her. She recalled the moment:
“When we kept walking, I noticed the meowing stopped. I picked up Nugget, so I could quietly walk back, and the meowing started again.”
She couldn’t find the cat until she looked up into the towering tree. To her surprise, she spotted a little silhouette of a cat against the street light. She said:
“She was about 25 feet up with no branches to jump down onto. So my calling for her didn’t work.”
The poor cat was probably so frightened and helpless and stuck there for who knows how long.
Holly was determined to save this distressed cat. She tried reaching out to nearby resources, including the local school, the Humane Society, and even the fire department.
Yet, despite her best efforts, none could offer assistance. With no other options left, Holly decided to rescue the cat herself. She recalled:
“A friend with an extension ladder came over that evening, and I climbed up to her, but she would back up out of reach.”
Unfortunately, the cat’s fear made the rescue mission increasingly challenging. Undeterred, Holly went to a nearby store and bought a can of tuna, hoping it might coax the cat down. Yet, the cat remained out of reach.
As daylight faded, Holly decided to return and try again the next day. The following morning, something extraordinary happened – more people came to lend a helping hand.
When the landlord of the building across the street found out about the rescue mission, he offered his extension ladder. A few more people joined and offered their assistance as well.
Holly climbed the ladder once more, extending her hand towards the cat. To her amazement, this time, the cat didn’t retreat. Perhaps exhaustion, hunger, or sheer fright had worn it down.
Finally, the beautiful feline allowed Holly to safely take her and bring her down. Holly recalled the heartwarming moment:
“I held her close to me and climbed down one rung at a time. When I put her inside (a carrier), she was so passive and compliant. She just seemed so relieved.”
Holly then contacted Sarah Hughes, a volunteer from The Meow Mission, Indiana, to ensure the cat had a safe and warm place to stay. She added:
“She was friendly, comfortable with being handled, and purred after she had some food and water.”
The Heartwarming Reunion
However, the story didn’t end there! The cat was so lovely and friendly that everyone thought she was someone’s pet who probably got lost.
That thought haunted Holly, so she started checking lost-and-found pages as soon as she got home.
Once again, Holly was determined to help the cat reunite her with her loved ones.
She filed a “found pet” report and took the cat to Family Pet Health Center, Indiana, to have her scanned for a microchip.
Yet, there was no need for scanning, as the veterinary technicians instantly recognized the cat. Holly recounted:
“When I walked in, the vet tech took one look into the carrier and said, ‘I know who that cat belongs to.’”
Holly was beyond happy to find out the cat had a family and that they’d be reunited. She added:
“Two vet techs at the clinic live in the same neighborhood, and they both had seen a post (online) about the cat. They also had received a full color ‘Lost Pet’ flier featuring this beautiful cat with distinct facial markings.”
Finally, the mystery was solved. It turned out the cat’s name was Winnifred, who had been missing for two weeks.
Winnifred was an indoor cat who had made a quick escape but didn’t return home until Holly rescued her from the tree.
Winnifred’s owner, Madge, had been tirelessly searching for her beloved feline, posting flyers throughout the neighborhood. Thanks to Holly, her wish came true. Holly shared:
“The employee called Madge, and said, ‘Someone brought Winnifred in.’ And she pulled the phone away from her ear because Madge yelled, ‘What?’”
Right after the long-awaited call, Madge rushed to the clinic to reunite with her beloved furry companion.
Madge was overjoyed, holding her tears while giving Holly a warm embrace. Then she snuggled Winnifred in her arms and went home. Holly said:
“She was telling all of us that just that morning, she had taken a walk and was trying to come to terms with the fact she might never see Winnie again.”
That was a truly remarkable and heartwarming reunion, all thanks to a kind-hearted woman who never gave up on saving the poor cat.
